Nadal also marched on in his pursuit of a 13th French Open title and record-tying 20 major overall. His opponent, Stefano Travagliaproved no match for Nadal’s overpowering clay-court game. Nadal was on court for just 95 minutes, winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-0.
Sebastian Korda, Nadal’s next opponent, is the 20-year-old son of 1998 Australian Open champion Petr Korda. Korda defeated Pedro Martinez 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.
The 2015 champion, Stan Wawrinka, fell to French wild card Hugo Gaston, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win. Ranked 239th, Gaston next plays Thiem.
In the women’s draw, top-seeded Simona Halep defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-1. Anisimova, 19, had beaten the 2018 champion in the quarterfinals last year.
Auto racing: Josef Newgarden, a two-time IndyCar champion, pulled away from the rest of the field over the 18 laps, racing to his third win of the season, this time by a margin of 14.2940 seconds over Alexander Rossi.

Golf: Keegan Bradley fired a 7-under 65, including three straight birdies on the back nine to take a two-shot lead over J.T. Poston and Charley Hoffman at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss. Bradley, whose victory in the BMW Championship at Aronimink two years ago was his only title in the last eight years, was at 13-under 131. ... Nasa Hataoka shot a 4-under 67 and a one-stroke lead over Mi Hyang Lee heading into the weekend in the Shoprite LPGA Classic in Galloway, N.J.
WNBA: Breanna Stewart scored 37 points, including 11 to start the fourth quarter, to help the Seattle Storm beat the Las Vegas Aces 93-80 in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals in Bradenton, Fla. Jewell Loyd added 28 points and Sue Bird had a WNBA playoff-record 16 assists.
