A man died late Monday after crashing an SUV into a highway support beam during a police chase, authorities said.

The car burst into flames during the incident. The driver’s identity has not yet been released. No one else was in his car.

Munster Police said in a press release that officers pulled the man over around 10:45 p.m. for a “traffic violation.” They discovered he didn’t have a license and had a pending arrest warrant in Texas.

When officers ordered him out of the car, he took off, going east on I-80 / 94, before heading westbound. Indiana State Police and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department joined the pursuit.

He crashed as he tried to exit on Cline Avenue.

A Munster Police representative referred further questions to Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Glen Fifield, who declined to answer what the Texas warrant was.

Indiana State Police is “reconstructing the crash scene,” he wrote in an email. The man’s identity would be released once he was identified, he added.
