Golf legend Tiger Woods was released on bail late Friday, hours after his Land Rover clipped a truck, rolled onto its side and the golfer was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, officials said.

Woods had been traveling at “high speeds” on a residential road and after the crash showed “signs of impairment,” Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said, adding that investigators believe he had taken some kind of medication or drug. He described Woods as lethargic and said he agreed to a Breathalyzer test that showed no signs of alcohol, but he refused a urine test and was arrested.

Florida law required that he spend at least eight hours in jail before he could post bail.

Woods, who was not injured in the crash, had been held separate from others at the jail, Budensiek said.

“He’s not going to be with other inmates that could hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did,” he said. “He’ll pay the price, but he’s not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail.”

Woods’ manager at Excel Sports did not immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.

It was the second time Woods has been arrested for a DUI not as a result of the influence of alcohol. He said he took a bad mix of painkillers when authorities found him in 2017 asleep behind the wheel of his car, the engine still running and its driver’s side damaged. Woods pleaded guilty then to reckless driving.

Gary Woodland had to play hard to stay in front Saturday in the Houston Open and he added a pair of birdies late in his round for a 5-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead over Nicolai Højgaard as he goes for his first win since the 2019 U.S. Open.

Woodland and Højgaard (63) were flawless in the final hour at Memorial Park and created some separation going into today, with no one else closer than five shots.

Woodland has become a popular figure in golf for the way he has handled his recovery from brain surgery in September 2023, and earlier this month opening up on his struggles with post-traumatic syndrome disorder during an emotional interview at The Players Championship.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Miles Byrd will get his bachelor’s degree in business administration from San Diego State in May and then, like most graduates, pursue a well-paying job elsewhere.

The last remaining member of SDSU’s 2023 Final Four roster announced Friday that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal with the intention of using his final year of collegiate eligibility at another program.

Byrd explored turning pro last spring but was clear beforehand that if he returned to college, it would be with the Aztecs. He’s been more vague when queried this year, and the feeling around the program was that he’d follow former teammates Lamont Butler and Keshad Johnson, who spent four years at SDSU and graduated before closing their college careers at Kentucky and Arizona, respectively.
