1: The Pioneer High School boys varsity tennis team began the season on the road at River Valley in Yuba City and suffered a narrow 5-3 defeat.
2: The Pioneer High School varsity softball team passed their first test with flying colors when they hosted Lincoln to begin the 2024 campaign and dominated the Zebras 10-0 in five innings.
3: In a symbolic but heartfelt gesture intended to rectify historical injustices, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution to rescind a regrettable and discriminatory decision made during World War II. On June 10, 1943, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution opposing the release of Japanese Americans confined in internment camps across the United States. Recognizing the grave errors of the past, the current board took the monumental action of rectifying this injustice during their meeting.
4: Yolo County Animal Services’ Clear the Shelter event welcomed over 100 attendees and led to the successful adoption of 10 dogs and three older cats.
5: Voters in Yolo County headed to the polls on Super Tuesday to make their voices heard in the March 5 primary elections. Residents weighed in on the presidential primary and selected their preferred candidates in key local races for various local offices including judge of the Yolo Superior Court and several county supervisor seats.
6: The first batch of unofficial election results from the Yolo County Elections Office showed Mike Thompson firmly ahead of other candidates for California’s 4th Congressional District seat. Contested local races had incumbent Mary Sandy, Sheila Allen and incumbent Angel Barajas in the lead for their respective supervisor seats. Deputy Attorney Clara Levers led the way for the open judge seat on the Yolo Superior Court.
7: After a few months of warming up in the role, new Woodland Community College President Dr. Lizette Navarette was formally welcomed to the Yuba Community College District family with a reception in her honor.
8: Dane Gallagher was earmarked as the new head coach of the Woodland Wolves football program after working as a teacher at the school for nine years and coaching various age levels and sports for the Wolves.
9: The Woodland Christian girls varsity basketball team lost 57-40 to Oakland in the penultimate round of the NorCal playoffs.
10: Team 5458: Digital Minds, a local all-inclusive robotics club made up of and open to Woodland area high school students, hosted its annual Shop Showcase.
11:” On Monday, March 11, inside the Woodland Public Library, 30 local residents become United States citizens during a small and intimate naturalization ceremony organized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency.
12: Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig held a press conference at the West Sacramento Walmart Supercenter to announce the launch of an innovative new direct-to-DA retailer reporting program designed to dramatically expedite the investigation and prosecution of retail crimes.
13: Roughly 50 volunteers planted 80 shade trees at Crawford, Tredway and Traynham Parks on the morning of Saturday, March 9 in Woodland as part of the city’s Arbor Day celebration.
14: The Center for Land-Based Learning held a two-part Carbon Farming workshop series, including an in-person field day event, to teach farmers how they could implement carbon sequestration techniques, which chemically move carbon from the air into the soil or plant matter.
15: Woodland Joint Unified School District students excelled at the district’s annual Geography Bee. This year’s winners were Colson Martin from Sci-Tech Academy in first place, Khang Le from Spring Lake Elementary in second place and Sambhav Khadka from Woodland Prairie Elementary in third place.
16: Two Woodland residents were arrested after detectives with the Davis Police Department Intelligence-Led Policing team located over 20 firearms and cocaine in their residence.
17: Late last month in Dublin, California, the Woodland Soccer Club 2011 Boys Orange team won its second consecutive NorCal State Cup. The squad won the cup on Feb. 25 by a score of 2-0, defeating 1974 Newark FC 11B. Oliver Delgado scored both goals, one of which came via a penalty kick.
18: A week earlier, the Woodland High School softball team traveled about 35 miles east to Citrus Heights and defeated Mesa Verde a final score of 4-3 to open up Golden Empire League play.
19 to 21: After losing the two games of the 2024 season, the Woodland Christian High School varsity baseball team has won five consecutive contests. They rolled into Winters for a Yolo County clash and shut out the Warriors by a final score of 13-0. ... Carlos Dominguez, the former UC Davis student accused of killing two people and injuring a third, pleaded not guilty to those attacks in the Yolo Superior Court earlier in the month. Dominguez is charged with the stabbing murders of David Henry Breaux, 50, and 20-year-old UC Davis student Karim Abou Najm and the attempted murder of Kimberlee Guillory.
22: After a scoreless first inning in the Golden Empire League matchup on the east side of town, the Pioneer High School softball team pounced and beat Woodland High School by a final score of 22-0 in five innings.
23: The Pioneer High School baseball team defeated Woodland High School in a thrilling 11-10 win in game two of their three-game series. The Patriots would go on to sweep the series one day later.

25: After months of contract negotiations between Dignity Health and Aetna, local Aetna members were temporarily no longer able to visit Woodland Clinic after April 1.
26: The Woodland City Council discussed and affirmed its updated goals and strategic plan during a March meeting after holding a public study session on Feb. 24, during which they reviewed and established their previous goals and plans. The goals include improving quality of life, focusing on economic development and downtown, strengthening public safety and infrastructure, and enhancing governance and fiscal responsibility.
27: A 2-year-old died from her injuries at the hospital after being struck by a vehicle at the 76 gas station located at 300 West St. Woodland Police Department officers were dispatched to the gas station for a report of a child who was hit by a vehicle. Officers arrived and determined that a toddler had been hit and transported by family members to the hospital, where she later died.
28: Guests from around Yolo County got an up-close look at how falcons are trained to hunt crop pests during the Center for Land-Based Learning’s falconry in agriculture event. The event marked the return of the center’s speaker series, which has been bringing together innovators and thought leaders to share their insights for the next generation of agricultural and environmental stewards since Spring 2022.
29: On the eve of Good Friday, the Woodland Christian High School girls’ varsity softball team hosted Woodland High School this week to cap off two weeks of crosstown clashes in several sports before spring break. In a back-and-forth contest, the Cardinals defended their home turf and defeated the Wolves 14-7.
30: The San Francisco Giants visited Yolo County earlier in the week for an exhibition game against their Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats. In front of a sold-out crowd on Sunday evening at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, the River Cats prevailed by a final score of 8-1.
31: Earlier in the month, Congressman Mike Thompson, D-Yolo, presented the city of Woodland with a check for $1.05 million for the Interstate 5/State Route113 Connectors Project as part of the East Main Street Neighborhood Livability Project. According to a press release from Thompson’s office, he was able to secure the money in the government funding bill that was signed into law on March 9, 2024.
