Almost five years to the day it opened in Orland Park, City Barbeque closed its doors at 14301 S. LaGrange Road for the last time April 9.

“We’ve enjoyed our time in the community, but unfortunately, this location just did not work for our business model,” said Elizabeth Grunewald, brand communications manager for the Ohio-based restaurant chain in an email on Monday.

“We’re still smoking at our four other Chicagoland joints, though — folks can find us in Deerfield, Downers Grove, Park Ridge, and Vernon Hills. We have no plans to close any of our other locations in Illinois and look forward to serving and creating happiness in the area for a long time to come.”

New recycling center opens in South Holland

Cook County has partnered with South Suburban College to establish the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials, a permanent recycling drop-off facility located on the college’s main campus in South Holland and open to all Cook County residents. A grand opening is planned from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 22 on the north side of the campus in the overflow parking lot.

Culver’s to support families of fallen police officers, firefighters

Nine Chicago area Culver’s restaurants will donate a percentage of sales to the families of fallen Chicago police Officer Andres Vasquez-Lasso, firefighter Jermain Pelt and fire Lt. Jan Tchoryk from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. April 25, during “Fallen Hero’s Share Day.”

Participating Culver’s locations include: Bridgeview, 9229 S. Harlem; Lyons, 8211 Ogden Ave.; Berwyn, 6943 Roosevelt Road; Franklin Park, 2751 Rose St.; Oak Lawn, 10745 S. Cicero; Six Corners (Chicago), 4939 W. Irving Park Road; Elmwood Park, 7521 W. Grand Ave.; Elmhurst, 436 N. York St.; Midway (Chicago), 6541 S. Cicero.

Northwestern Medicine to distribute Narcan nasal spray

Northwestern Medicine team members will distribute Narcan (naloxone) nasal spray and provide education about opioid overdose prevention during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22.

Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital, 12251 S. 80th Avenue, Palos Heights, and seven other Northwestern Medicine sites will also offer drive-up locations where community members can safely dispose of unused medications.

Sharps and liquids will not be accepted, and Take Back Day is for community members, not for commercial organizations.

Chambers to host business grant workshop

The Evergreen Park Chamber of Commerce and Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce are hosting a Back to Business Grant information session and workshop with the American Business Immigration Coalition on April 25, at the Hilton Chicago/Oak Lawn, 9333 S. Cicero Ave., Oak Lawn, for area restaurants, bars, hotels and creative arts organizations.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a presentation about the grants program and eligibility requirements, followed by a Q&A and a workshop to assist businesses with submitting their grant applications. A limited number of laptops and scanners will be provided, however, attendees are encouraged to bring their own.

The Illinois B2B grant program provides recovery grants for businesses in the hardest-hit sectors, which include restaurants, bars, hotels and the creative arts. Eligible businesses can apply for $175 million in available grant funding as part of the state’s efforts to support post-pandemic recovery. Applications are open until May 10.

Dykstra Home Services merges with Precision Today

Crestwood-based Dykstra Home Services, which has been around for 97 years, has merged with Precision Today, a company that has served the Chicago area for over 30 years, general manager Jennifer Milazzo announced in a release.

Services will now be provided as Precision Today. In addition to HVAC, services now also include plumbing, drain, sewer rehabilitation and replacement.

Fire to play US Open Cup match in Bridgeview

The Chicago Fire soccer team will face Chicago House AC in the third round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at 7 p.m. April 26 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview.

A knockout style competition, the Open Cup is the second oldest continually operating soccer tournament in the world. This year’s champion will automatically secure a berth in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.

The Fire have won four U.S. Open Cup trophies in Club history, winning the 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2006 editions of the tournament. Chicago’s four titles are tied with Seattle Sounders FC and Sporting KC for the most championships won by an MLS team, and the second-most in the history of the tournament. Additionally, the Fire have appeared in the semifinals on 13 occasions, including six times in an eight-year period (2011-2018), tallying a 45-16-7 record in the annual competition.
