An Oakland County marijuana retailer is reaching out to the community to help fill the shelves of a local food pantry — and giving away up to an ounce of cannabis flower to those who donate canned goods.
Through Friday, April 25, The Greenhouse of Walled Lake is running its “Cans for Cannabis” program to support Hospitality House in Walled Lake. The campaign has been extended from its original April 17 date, with an additional 100 ounces of cannabis flower set aside so anyone who donates 10 or more non-perishable food items in a single visit can get one ounce.
Other incentives: One free pre-roll for one item donated in a single visit (limit one), and one free infused pre-roll for three items donated in a single visit (limit one).
“We’ve seen thousands of food items pour in from the community,” said Jerry Millen, founder of The Greenhouse. “It’s a beautiful reminder that cannabis and compassion go hand in hand. We’re proud to support Hospitality House and the vital work they do here in Walled Lake — and we’re not done yet.”
Susan Erspamer, executive director of Hospitality House, said the non-profit organization’s client load has increased 150% over the last two years — with 2,000 families and more than 5,000 individuals getting assistance from the food pantry in 2024.
“We rely heavily on the community for support. When people do things like can drives, it offsets the food we have to purchase and helps keep a variety on our shelves,” Erspamer said. “We’re grateful when businesses step up — businesses such as (The Greenhouse) help meet our increasing demand.”
Drop off donations at The Greenhouse, located at 103 E. Walled Lake Drive at the Pontiac Trail intersection. The store is open every day, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Hospitality House food pantry is located in Commerce Township, serving the Oakland County community since 2001.
