Los Altos Hills

Alan, long-time resident of Los Altos Hills, left us peacefully at the age of 82, and is predeceased by his parents, Lloyd Franklin Cummings & Ruth Esther Bouterious Cummings. He grew up in Oakland and attended Oakland Technical High School, graduating in 1959. He spent the next 4 years at Stanford University, graduating in 1963 with a degree in economics.

After graduation, he spent a year with the Bank of California, but his true love had always been Stanford, and when the opportunity arose to become Assistant Director of Women’s Housing, he didn’t hesitate. While his working years were spent in avariety of functions, his role as Senior Associate Athletic Director was his favorite.

Among his many accomplishments in this capacity were bringing both the 1984 Olympics and Super Bowl XIX of 1985 to Stanford Stadium, but his greatest contribution was funding and fostering excellence in women’s sports that continues to this day.

He and his wife of almost 60 years, Judy Cummings, built their home in Los Altos Hills in 1972, appreciating the rural area’s greenery and wildlife. In addition to his love of Stanford sports, he enjoyed coaching youth soccer, playing tennis at Fremont Hills Country Club, running the Dish, playing golf on the Stanford course, and playing and teaching bridge at the Palo Alto Bridge Center, where he became a Silver Life Master. He loved his family and he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his brother, Gary Lloyd Cummings, his wife, Judy, his son, Christopher, his daughter-in-law, Michelle, and granddaughters, Meredith, Abigail, and Scarlett.
