Resident of Concord Dr. Jason Avers Appel, a man of profound dignity, deep intellect, and unwavering devotion to his family, passed away on May 23, 2025, at age 94.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, to David and Belle Appel, Jason was raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood, wherehecultivated his lifelong love of learning and scholarship. He earned a Bachelor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1950 and went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1954 at the age of 24 with a specialty in Orthopedic Surgery.
After practicing medicine for a few years, Jason proudly served his country as aCaptain in the United States Army MedicalCorps.
While stationed in Ludwigsburg, Germany, he met the love of his life, Ursula Röhm. The two were married and shared an extraordinary 68 years of marriage. Jason and Ursula returned to Chicago, where they welcomed their first2 children, Miles and Tanya.
In 1962, with characteristic vision and determination, Jason moved his young family West to California where they welcomed their third child, Joshua. Settling first in Alameda and later in Concord, he established a respected private practice in orthopedic surgery and became an integral part of the local medical community.
He served on the Board of Directors at Mount Diablo Hospital and later continued his service to the public through his work at Contra CostaCoun- ty’s Merrithew Memorial Hospital as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery. Therehe cared for countless patients with compassion andskill.
Jason eventually retired from his medical practice but neverfromlife. He pursued awiderange of passions with characteristic enthusiasm and curiosity: cars, horses, sailing, and even the fine arts, briefly owning an art gallery on Maiden Lane in San Francisco.
Jason also enjoyed walking his dog Pablo every day. He was known not only for his surgical precision but also for his intellectual vigor and love of meaningful, spirited conversation.
Above all, Jason was ade- voted husband, a proud and loving father, and a deeply engaged grandfather.
His family was the cornerstone ofhis life, and his presence brought strength, wisdom, and warmth to all who knew him.
Jason is survived by his beloved wife Ursula, his three children, Miles (wife, Shannon), Tanya, and Joshua (wife, Angela) and six cherished grandchildren.
His legacy of integrity, intellect, & love will live onineach ofthem.
