The Yolo County Library will be showing the exhibit “Herstory 1 & 2: The Legal History of Chinese American Women” in honor of Women’s History Month this March.
The exhibit, curated by Dr. Chang C. Chen, aka Dr. Chiu Chang, showcases the legal milestones and harrowing stories of these women, according to a press release from the county.
“Before their lives and accomplishments are completely lost in the annals of history, the author aims to tell ‘Herstory’ and give voice to those Chinese American women who paved the way for our past, present and future,” the press release read.
Chen immigrated to America from Taiwan 50 years ago to pursue her graduate studies. After obtaining her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Rutgers University and J.D. from Columbia University Law School, she began practicing law. Her legal career spanned 35 years.
Chen was also elected as a Taiwan senator, hosted four television shows, and authored 83 books. “Herstory: The Legal History of Chinese American Women” was her first book in English and the first exhibition she curated.
“During the 1990s, her most popular program, “Chiu Chang Talking Law,” on Star-TV in Hong Kong, catapulted her into the limelight,” the press release continued. “She swiftly became a celebrity female attorney and personality, which is, still to this day, a real feat in Taiwan.”
Developed by the National Women’s History Alliance, this year’s theme for Women’s History Month is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories” in order to honor and shine the spotlight on the women of all communities who, like Chen, have “devoted their lives and talents to producing art, pursuing truth, and reflecting the human condition decade after decade.” More information about the theme can be found online at nationalwomenshistoryalliance.org.
“Herstory 1 & 2: The Legal History of Chinese American Women” will be at all Yolo County Library branches, except for the South Davis Montgomery Branch Library. Chen will discuss her books and the exhibit at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25 at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, located at 315 E. 14th street in Davis, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 20th at the Arthur F. Turner Community Library, located at 1212 Merkley Avenue in West Sacramento. Both events will be recorded.
Additionally, Yolo County Library branches are providing bibliographies featuring books by and about women who reflect this year’s theme and a commemorative bookmark.
