Santa Cruz’s Adam Bartlett was eliminated on the opening day of action at the World Surf League’s BTMI Barbados Surf Pro at Soup Bowl, Bathsheba, Barbados, on Monday.

Men’s and women’s competitions are being held at the contest, a Qualifying Series 5,000-point event. The contest window runs through Sunday.

Bartlett took third in Heat 6 of the Round of 112. He finished with a two-wave total score of 9.10 in his 20-minute heat in 1- to 4-foot surf. He tied for 97th overall.

Bartlett finished behind Sage Katz (10.34) of Puerto Rico, Enzo Ackermann (10.00) of Germany, and ahead of American Kieran Spring (6.13).

Santa Cruz’s John Mel competes against San Clemente’s Kei Kobayashi and two surfers to be determined in Heat 14 of the Round of 64.

In the women’s competition, Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller competes in Heat 3 of the Round of 48. Encinitas’ Maddie Stanton, Puerto Rico’s Mia Calderon, and Canadian Ocea Green are also in her heat.

Cycling

Santa Cruz Classic Criterium >> Andrew Carr, who competes for Voler Factory Racing, took first place in the Category 1/2/Pro race at the 56th annual Santa Cruz Classic Criterium on Sunday. Ryan Gorman, who competes for CycleSport.com, took second. Pacific Grove native Eamon Lucas took third.

Jamie Chapman, who competes for Speedblock p/b Terun, took first in the Women’s Category 1/2/3/Pro race. Canadian Alexandrine Obrand, who now lives and trains in the Bay Area, took second. San Ramon’s Melanie Wong, who competes for ATX Wolfpack p/b ProBikeKit, took third.

Running

Oakland Half Marathon >> Santa Cruz’s Jay Thomson, 45, took first place out of 2,477 finishers at the Oakland Half Marathon on Sunday. He averaged 5:21 a mile and finished in 1:10:18.

Sierra Castaneda, 27, of San Francisco won the women’s title in 1:19:21.

Oakland Marathon >> Santa Cruz’s Rebecca Heymann, 37, took seventh among female racers and 43rd overall out of 878 finishers at the 16th Oakland Marathon on Sunday. She finished in 3:07:19.

Air Force Capt. George Crist, 27, of Davis won the men’s title in 2:29:59, and Sara Bagnell, 28, of San Francisco repeated as the women’s champion in 2:51:51 and finished 11th overall.

Women’s tennis

At North Central 4, UC Santa Cruz 3 >> Melody Ghaffari and Chloe Wu earned singles wins, but the Banana Slugs suffered a narrow road loss in Naperville, Illinois, on Sunday.

UCSC also earned a point in doubles after winning two of the three matches. Wu and Ghaffari won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Meghana Damojipurapuv and Sweden Van Houten won 6-3 at No. 3.

UCSC (6-6) plays Lake Forest in Illinois on Monday.

Men’s track and field

Hornet Invitational >> UCSC’s Erik Dodge, Evan Hofstetter, Luke Holland, Graeme Maclean, and Aaron Hillberg posted top-10 finishes at the two-day Hornet Invitational, which ended Saturday at Sacramento State.

Dodge took second in the pole vault (14 feet, 6.25 inches) and Hofstetter took eighth (11-9).

Holland broke the Banana Slugs’ record in the 5,000 with a time of 14:18.09 for fifth place.

Maclean took fifth in the 1.500-meter race (3:52.79), and Hillberg took seventh in the 800 (1:53.35).

Levi Laden broke the Banana Slugs’ record in the 400 in 48.73 seconds and took 14th place.

Women’s track and field

Hornet Invitational >> UCSC’s Eliza Zheng and Allyson Petersen posted top-10 finishes at the two-day Hornet Invitational, which ended Saturday at Sacramento State.

Women’s High Jump — Eliza Zheng took fifth in the high jump (5-2.5) and Petersen took eighth in the pole vault (9-7.25).

UCSC competes at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco on April 3-5.
