A 17-year-old juvenile has been charged in connection with a fire that destroyed a home in Mount Clemens and Macomb County prosecutors are considering trying him as an adult, prosecutors said Tuesday.
The April 10 early-morning fire badly damaged the home on Eldredge Street, leaving the family — including two 9-month-old babies — homeless. No one was injured in the incident. Authorities said the teen suspect was arrested by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office the following day for breaking into and detonating an explosive device in the home.
“I am especially outraged that the lives of two infants were put at risk,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a news release. “The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office will not tolerate this reckless disregard for human life and private property.”
At a preliminary hearing held last week in the Macomb County Family Court, Referee George Keller granted the Prosecutor’s Office request for an adjournment to April 17 to decide if the “interests of justice and protection of the public” require the defendant to be tried as an adult.
“We will make a determination about the totality of charges against the alleged perpetrator following a thorough review of all available evidence,” Lucido said in the release.
The teen remains detained in the Juvenile Justice Center in Mount Clemens. Seven people were in the home at the time of the 3 a.m. incident.
Delvon Lee, who was renting the house with Michelle Lee, told reporters he believed the fire was intentionally caused by someone he knows using illegal fireworks, namely an M-80.
Lee and Wilson have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise a goal amount of $10,000 for essential items, because they literally have nothing left. Flames and smoke badly damaged the interior and all of the family’s belongings.
Mount Clemens Mayor Laura Kropp said the city is collecting monetary and gift card donations through a drop box in the parking lot of City Hall, 1 Crocker Boulevard east of Gratiot Avenue. Checks can be made out to Downtown Development Committee, as Kropp advises not to put any cash in the box.
