CARMEL >> The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a bank robbery that occurred Friday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Bank branch at the Crossroads Shopping Center in Carmel. The Sheriff’s Office says the suspects were still at large as of Saturday morning.

At around 4:40 p.m. Friday, deputies received a call of a possible armed robbery at the Wells Fargo Bank Branch located at 26600 Carmel Center Place. The bank reported that there were multiple suspects they believed to be armed with handguns that entered the bank.

The first deputy arrived at the scene within minutes and located a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle was unoccupied.

Reports were also received of suspicious persons running toward Carmel Middle School. The campus was directed to go into secured procedures as a precaution.

Carmel Middle School, the District Office and maintenance yard were all placed under the law enforcement-directed lockdown and families were advised not to enter the campus. Police were posted at Carmel Valley Road to prevent anyone from entering.

The CMS Singer-Song Writer performance was canceled as well as the late bus, due to lack of access to the bus yard.

An extensive search was conducted by Carmel P.D., Seaside P.D., California State Parks, Salinas P.D. and California Highway Patrol with CHP’S H-70 helicopter at the mouth of Carmel Valley, the Carmel Riverbed and in areas in and around both the Wells Fargo Bank and Carmel Middle School.

The suspects were not located, but the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is confirming there is no active threat to the community of Carmel or Carmel Middle School.

One customer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by fire and ambulance personnel.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and who may have seen anything to help assist in identifying the suspects to call either Detective Rodrigo Lopez at 831-253-6050 or Detective Sergeant Nicholas Kennedy at 831-597-1228.
