If you love to hunt for bargains, the place to be this weekend is the M-15 garage sale — all 70 miles of it.

The route runs from Clarkston north to Bay City, covering portions of five counties, and is set to run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Official selling times may vary based on municipalities.

In 2022 organizers estimated that 20,000-30,000 people shopped along M-15.

The M-15 Heritage Route Committee is made up of a group of communities — Atlas Township, Brandon Township, Goodrich, Davison Township, Davison, and Forest Township — that organizes and promotes the annual event.

Kandi O’Rourke of Clarkston has been part of the event since its inception 15 years ago and sets up rows of tables in her backyard off of M-15.

“Clarkston is notorious for garage sales and this has just snowballed over the years and become a huge event,” she said. “It has just grown through word-of-mouth and people telling their neighbors about it year after year.”

O’Rourke said the sale has grown from a one-day event into a full weekend of sales for some people.

“More and more people are doing three- or four-day sales, because to do a one-day garage sale is a lot of work,” said O’Rourke. “To stretch it out makes more sense for some people.”

There will be several locations along the route that will have dozens of spaces available for vendors, sellers and food trucks like the Millington United Methodist Church, the Brandon Township Library and the Davison VFW post.

Parking along the route has been an issue over the last few years as more people take advantage of the one-day event. Although local police departments will not be making a concerted effort to ticket cars, they will be present throughout the day.

“There is no special traffic detail assigned for this event, but there will be patrols and violations will be enforced,” said Oakland County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Steve Huber.

“Don’t park alongside a state highway, M-15,” said Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Brandon substation commander Lt. Greg Glover. “Park on side roads, parking lots. We will be ticketing cars parked along M-15 during the garage sale.”
