PORTLAND, Ore. >> Preston Judd came off the bench and scored a shorthanded goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time to rally the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Friday night..

Judd subbed into the match for Beau Leroux in the 75th minute and scored for the third time this season and the seventh of his career when Portland goalkeeper James Pantemis stopped but couldn’t wrap up a shot by Ousseni Bouda. Judd was there to tap the deflection in for the equalizer.

San Jose (6-7-5) earned a point despite being forced to play a man down from the 52nd minute on after midfielder Ian Harkes was tagged with a second yellow card.

“I think in a game like this, it’s tough being a man down,” Judd said. “Maybe calls aren’t going our way, but when your number gets called, you have to go in and try to do your job. And today, I tried to make the best difference I could make being a man down. I was at the right spot at the right time to get that game-tying goal.”

The Quakes are 3-4-1 in their past eight MLS matches and are tied for seventh in the Western Conference standings wih 23 points, three behind Seattle and LAFC. The Earthquakes travel to play FC Dallas on June 25.

“I think the players have been outstanding since Day One when we came for preseason,” Quakes coach Bruce Arena said. “Although our record to date isn’t what I’d like it to be, because I think there’s two or three results that could’ve been different for us and really put us in a good position, we continue to make progress.

“Obviously the next 16 games are going to be critical if we aspire to make the playoffs. So we’ll keep plugging away, but the team deserves a lot of credit. They’ve done a real good job.”

Portland (8-4-6) took a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute on a goal by defender Juan Mosquera. It was his first goal this season and his fourth in his 80th career appearance — all with the Timbers. Felipe Mora notched his third assist of the campaign.

When asked what he told his team after Harkes received his second yellow card and were forced to play a man down, Arena said, “Nothing that you can write a book about, but they all knew their job.

“Once we went down a goal, it was important that we didn’t go down two goals, and in the last 20 minutes or so, we made substitutions to try to get a goal back under difficult odds. Everybody who came into the game did an outstanding job. The last change we made was Bouda and Preston, and Preston scores off the rebound from Bouda’s shot, so everyone played a role. Obviously the best we could’ve done under those circumstances was walk away with a point, and we did that.”

James Pantemis finished with six saves in goal for the Timbers.

Daniel De Sousa Britto saved four shots for the Earthquakes.

Portland is 14-0-5 all time at home against San Jose.

San Jose went 2-1-0 against Portland this season. On May 3 in MLS play, the Quakes won 4-1 at PayPal Park before edging the Timbers 1-0 on May 20 in San Jose in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.

The Timbers return to league play on June 28 at Toronto FC.
