Junior Olivia Contreras had eight kills, three aces, and three digs, and the Pajaro Valley High girls volleyball team closed Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division play with a perfect record Tuesday.
Pajaro Valley (17-9, 12-0) earned a 25-9, 25-16, 25-22 sweep of Ceiba in the teams’ regular-season finale. Senior Aaliyah Chavez had five kills and eight digs for the Grizzlies, who won their first league title in the sport since 2009.
Grizzlies coach Jenn Jacinto said her squad was pretty inexperienced at the outset of the season and trained in hard in the offseason and continued to progress with each match.
“It’s been so rewarding, mostly a testament to the hard work that was put through the season,” Jacinto said. “Many athletes started training in May. We had some spring trainings and they came with a desire to build up on their skill. Whether is was to be on varsity or not, but they had that goal, or heart, to give it a little more thought on how they wanted to play this season, specifically.
“I hope this now gives them a reminder of changing the perspective of PV volleyball or even PV athletics. This team really shines the most through their resilience. Though only the Santa Lucia Division, every point was pushed and earned.”
Junior Jaqueline Alvarez-Zavala had five kills for Pajaro Valley. Junior Monique Ayala served five aces and made 18 assists, and junior Sophia Garcia-Arias had two kills and made 13 assists.
Jacinto praised the Grizzlies for their ability to support and push each other.
“I think every step taken on the court was filled with their all,” Jacinto said.
At Harbor 3, Santa Cruz 0 >> Senior middle blocker Sabine Kemos had 10 kills and two blocks, and the No. 1 seed Pirates swept the No. 4 Cardinals 25-19, 25-19. 25-21 in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Tournament semifinals on Tuesday.
Senior outside hitter Isla Johnson had nine kills and eight digs for Harbor, and sophomore middle blocker Cecile Novembre made eight kills.
Senior setter Sandy Enriquez made 14 assists and served two aces for the Pirates, and sophomore setter Dylan Schutz made 11 assists.
Harbor (20-9) hosts No. 3 Scotts Valley in the tournament championship on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Scotts Valley 3, Soquel 0 >> Outside hitters Ava Morrison and Hayden Smith each had double-doubles as the No. 3 Falcons swept the No. 2 Knights 25-18, 25-19, 25-13 in the SCCAL Tournament semifinals at Harbor High on Tuesday.
Morrison, a senior, had 11 kills, 13 digs, and three aces, and Smith, a junior, had 11 kills, 12 digs, two blocks, and two aces. Junior middle blocker Harlan Hennager had four kills and two blocks.
Junior opposite Aila Papadopoulos had 12 kills and five digs for the Falcons, and junior middle blocker Makayla McDonnell had six blocks, two kills and seven digs.
Claire Petersen had nine kills and 11 digs for the Knights. Liv Barton had six kills and three digs, and Lily Juarez-Sapone had 13 assists and six digs. Gianna Audisio had 14 digs, and Mia Riddle had 10 assists.
No. 3 Scotts Valley plays at No. 1 Harbor in the tournament championship on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Girls water polo
At Harbor 17, SLV 8 >> Senior captains Serena Manildi and Abigail Higgins combined for nine goals in the Pirates’ win in their play-in game to the SCCAL Tournament on Tuesday.
Junior Kate Brandon had three goals, two assists, and two steals, and sophomore Morgan Lakey scored twice.
Seniors Zia Jaggar and Lily Grauman, and sophomore Malalai Martin Etemadi also scored goals.
Sophomore goalie Kallista Whitmore made eight saves and two assists.
Harbor (9-12) plays at No. 1 Soquel in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

UC Santa Cruz 6, at California Maritime 1 >> Nico Herrera-Land scored twice in the Banana Slugs’ rout in Vallejo on Tuesday.
Caleb Lee had a goal and an assists for UCSC. Max Beldner, Acer Cristea, and Torin Volkamer also scored. Soren Groessi had an assist.
Goalie Tobias Jacobson-Bell made three saves in 58 minutes, and teammate Chris Jamrok made a save over the final 32 minutes.
UCSC (6-1-8) plays at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (11-3-2) on Saturday at noon.
Skyline 2, at Cabrillo 1 >> Luca Venturoli’s unassisted goal for the Seahawks knotted the score in the 55th minute, but the Trojans’ Angel Ramirez scored the winner in the 67th minute of the teams’ Coast Conference North Division match Tuesday.
Goalie Angel Edgar made three saves for the Seahawks (5-6-3, 3-4-1). Alejandro Munoz made seven saves for the Trojans (11-3-1, 6-1-1).
Cabrillo plays at Ohlone (1-11-3, 0-7-1) in Fremont on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Cabrillo 2, at De Anza 0 >> Savannah Cresswell scored twice in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference North Division match Tuesday.
Cresswell scored on a penalty kick in the 26th minute and headed in a corner kick in the 87th minute.
Goalie Andrea Rosales Ruvalcaba made eight saves for the Mountain Lions (0-11-2, 0-5-1).
Cabrillo (5-10-1, 2-3-0) hosts West Valley (11-4-1, 5-1-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
