Two pets were rescued from a fire that badly damaged an Elgin family’s home early Thursday morning.
Firefighters arrived at the one-story, single-family residence in the 600 block of Cooper Street shortly after 1 a.m. to find smoke coming from the first floor and fire in the basement, an Elgin Fire Department news release said.
Crews needed 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which spread to the first floor before being contained, the release said.
Family members were alerted by a smoke detector and escaped unharmed.
Their pets were rescued by firefighters and returned to the family.
Damage is estimated to be about $250,000 and house deemed uninhabitable, the release said.
The cause is under investigation but initial indications are it could be tied to electrical issues.
