The Riverside City Council is expected to consider a $3.3 million contract for the planned redesign of the Police Department’s headquarters at its meeting Tuesday.

The proposed contract with Holt Architects Inc., located in Palm Desert, covers the design of the project.

If the council decides to renovate police headquarters, the total cost would be $49 million. Construction of a new building is estimated at $62 million.

Riverside’s current police headquarters, at 4102 Orange St., was built in 1963. The facility is outdated and does not support an efficient work environment, according to the Police Department. The building has inadequate heating, cooling and ventilation, recurring plumbing failures, and an insufficient power supply and layout, the department said in a report prepared for the council meeting.

If the council initiates the project this week, officials say, construction would start in July 2026.
