A 6-year-old boy, whose inflatable kayak was blown at least 100 yards away from the Porter Beach shoreline, was rescued by jet skiers Thursday afternoon.

“It was an extremely happy ending,” said Sgt. Tom Blythe of the Porter Police Department.

The initial call at 12:57 p.m. triggered a response from the Porter and Chesterton Fire and Police Departments along with National Park Service rangers.

Blyrhe said that the wind had caused the kayak to drift north of the shoreline.

The person calling 911 described the inflatable as being 200 yards from shore, but by the time police and fire arrived, it was closer to 100 yards away.

Porter fire Chief Jay Craig Jr. was about to enter the water and Blythe said he was ready to follow.

Fortunately, jet skiers in the area intervened. One of the jet ski operators scooped the boy up and brought him to shore.

Blythe said they were also fortunate that the water surface was relatively flat and placid.

The boy was found to be in good shape after being checked by emergency squad personnel and went home with his parents who live in Chesterton, Blythe said.

With the temperature soaring to the high 80s, the beach had a larger than normal weekday crowd.
