Emaarion Boyd became the first minor league baseball player in at least 20 years to steal six bases in a game without getting a hit when he pulled off the feat for High-A Beloit (Wisconsin) against Cedar Rapids.

Boyd, batting ninth and playing center field in the 10-0 win Wednesday night, reached on a fielder’s choice, walk and hit by pitch. He stole second and third base each time.

He walked again with none out in the ninth inning but couldn’t steal any more bases because a runner was in front of him.

“I thought it would be even more crazy if I got eight,” Boyd said. “I wish I could have had two more. It would have been really crazy then.”

Boyd was an 11th-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2022 MLB amateur draft. He was part of a December trade for left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo that sent Boyd to the Miami Marlins.

The 21-year-old has 98 steals in 203 minor league games, with 83 in 187 games over the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Single-A Clearwater and High-A Jersey Shore.

According to MLB.com, no minor league player since at least 2005 had stolen six bases without getting a hit. No player has stolen six bases with no hits in a major league game since at least 1901.

Former major leaguer Mark DeRosa, a broadcaster for the MLB Network, will manage the U.S. for the second straight World Baseball Classic, USA Baseball said.

DeRosa led the U.S. to the championship game of the 2023 tournament, where it lost to Japan 3-2.

Michael Hill, MLB’s senior vice president of on-field operations and workforce development, will be the team’s general manager.

NFL

Linebacker Troy Reeder agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Rams.

The 30-year-old Reeder has spent five of his first six NFL seasons with the Rams, who joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware in 2019. He has started 37 games over five seasons as an inside linebacker for the Rams while also playing extensively on special teams.

Reeder spent the 2022 season with the Chargers before rejoining the Rams in 2023.

Reeder played in only six games last season due to injury. Christian Rozeboom and Omar Speights played the majority of the Rams’ snaps at inside linebacker in Reeder’s absence.

Rozeboom left for Carolina last month in free agency, and the Rams signed linebacker Nate Landman from Atlanta

The Indianapolis Colts released Matt Gay, a surprising move that came just two years after he became the NFL’s highest-paid kicker.

He had two years remaining on his $22.5 million contract and while the move will save the Colts $2.75 million on this year’s salary cap, Indy already was below the cap figure.

The bigger problem was Gay not meeting the lofty expectations after making more than 98% of his field goals in 2021-22, when he played for Rams.

He battled injuries throughout his Indy tenure but in the Colts’ retractable roof dome, Gay managed to make only 80.5% of his field goal attempts in 2023. His percentage slightly improved to 83.8% last season.

Soccer

The United States will play Haiti, Saudi Arabia, and Trinidad and Tobago in Group D during the first round of this year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Defending champion Mexico will meet Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Suriname in Group A of the biennial championship.

Canada will face Curaçao, El Salvador and Honduras in Group B.

Panama will take on Guadeloupe, Guatemala and Jamaica in Group C.

CONCACAF has not announced sites and dates for individual matches other than the opener at SoFi Stadium on June 14 and the final at Houston on July 6.

Major League Soccer’s Board of Governors will give further consideration to adopting a fall-to-spring calendar, a move that would align the league with its international counterparts.

The next phase includes “additional consultation with key stakeholders.” The MLS said in that any potential changes wouldn’t take effect until the 2027 season “at the earliest.”

Advocates for a shift have said it will give MLS a more competitive position for player transfers, while also freeing up players for international duty during the summer, when many major global tournaments take place.

Turmoil at the FIA, the governing body for auto racing series like Formula 1, has deepened after its deputy president for sport resigned in protest at how it is run.

Robert Reid was a running mate when FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem was elected in 2021. His resignation is the latest sign of discontent with the direction taken by the FIA under Ben Sulayem, whose tenure has seen a rift with F1 drivers and numerous senior officials leave or be replaced.

“I took on this role to help deliver greater transparency, stronger governance, and more collaborative leadership,” Reid posted on social media. “Over time, those principles have been increasingly set aside and I can no longer, in good faith, remain part of a system that no longer reflects them.”

The FIA has clashed with F1 drivers over Ben Sulayem’s plans to crack down on swearing. New rules introduced for 2025 make it possible for the FIA to suspend drivers who repeatedly swear or make political statements.
