Santa Cruz Boardriders Club took third place at the West Coast Boardriders’ two-day Wheat Cup at Lower Trestles in San Clemente on Friday.

The top four teams in the nine-team specialty event advanced to the U.S. Championships, held at the same site, on Saturday.

SCBR is joined by boardriders clubs from Space Coast, San Clemente, Huntington Beach, North Shore Hawaii, Jacksonville, Wrightsville Beach, Cape May County, and Encinitas in the national championships.

SCBR posted a 215.08 total score in The Wheat Cup and finished behind San Clemente Boardriders (255.87), and runner-up Huntington Beach (236.83). Encinitas (213.76) also advanced to nationals. South Bay Boardriders (181.47) and La Jolla (176.45) also made the final but failed to advance.

Josh Loya (12.60), Peter Mel (6.10), Shane Desmond (4.93) and John Hunter (4.17) helped Santa Cruz (27.80) take second to Huntington Beach (35.26) in 50 & up division. Loya took the whammy wave, and doubled his 6.30.

Austin Smith-Ford (16.20) had the whammy wave and doubled his 8.10, and teammates Nat Young (6.93), Shaun Burns (6.43), and Matt Myers (5.27) helped SCBR (34.83) take second to San Clemente (38.31) in the 30-39 division.

Randy Bonds (13.40) had the whammy wave and doubled his 6.70 to help SCBR take third in the 40-49 division (32.03). Tyler Fox (7.83), Bud Freitas (6.33), and Jesse Colombo (4.47) also contributed to SCBR’s total. San Clemente (38.57) took first in the division and Huntington Beach (36.24) was second.

SCBR took fourth in both the 15-19 (34.03) and women’s (30.43) divisions. Whammy waver Brody Price (16.00), Adam Bartlett (7.27), Max St. Denis (5.43) and James Daniel (5.33) scored for SCBR in the 15-19 division, which was won by Encinitas (38.70). Whammy waver Autumn Hays (13.34), Kaikora Nauenberg (5.83), Isla Hardy (5.83), and Keanna Miller (5.43) scored for SCBR in the women’s division, which was won by Santa Clemente (41.88).

SCBR (26.17) took sixth in the 20-29 division, which was won by San Clemente (37.63). Whammy waver AJ Menna (10.34), Austin Laurance (6.67), Alessandro “Alo” Slebir (5.63), and Ritchie Schmidt (3.53) scored for SCBR.

Track and field

Big West Championships: Cal Poly-SLO redshirt junior Isabel Sanchez, a Santa Cruz High alumna, took first place in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:41.52) and fifth in the 10,000 (35:49.29) at the Big West Championships at Jack Rose Track in Long Beach on Friday.

Sanchez was in the zone in her 3,000 win.

“I actually didn’t even know it was the last lap until I kept going over the next hurdle,” she said in a post-race interview with BWC media. “But it was a good race and I’m proud of my teammates.”

UC Irvine’s Kaia Schmidt took second in 10:43.51, and UC San Diego’s Kelsie Yamano (10:43.51) took third.

High school baseball

Santa Cruz 2, Aptos 1 >> Senior Seth Jin scored the decisive run on in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice chopper from Morgan Toohey, and the Cardinals won in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League on Friday.

Aptos had the potential tying run on base in the seventh, but Santa Cruz senior catcher Fernando DaCosta threw out a would-be base stealer for the final out.

DaCosta also had a hit and one RBI for the playoffs-bound Cardinals (15-11, 12-3), the second-place finisher in league. Like Jin, junior Matteo Caltabiano had a hit and run scored.

Samuel Garcia had a hit and one RBI for the Mariners (10-16, 5-10), who took fifth place in league. Cole McGillicuddy had a hit and run scored.

Senior right-hander Jason Graff gave up five hits and two walks in his complete-game win. He struck out six batters.

Senior right-hander Jason Yager gave up five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in his complete-game loss.

Aptos plays PCAL Gabilan Division champion Palma (20-6) in Salinas in a nonleague game to close the regular season on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The CCS seeding meeting takes place Monday afternoon in San Jose. The first round of the playoffs begin May 24.

High school softball

Watsonville 16, Carmel 3; 5 inn. >> Amelia Martinez had four hits, three RBI, and scored twice to help the Wildcatz win their regular-season finale Friday.

Taylor Alves had one hit, three RBI, and scored twice for the Wildcatz (13-13, 2-10), the sixth place finisher in the PCAL’s Gabilan Division. Esperanza Sigala and Audrina Rodriguez each had two hits, three RBI, and scored one run.

Mia Espinoza had two hits, one RBI, and scored twice for Watsonville. Ruiz Bella had a hit and scored three runs, Layla Romero had two hits and scored a run, and Jillian Lerma scored twice.

Lily Beals had a hit, one RBI, and a run scored for the Padres (19-6, 13-3), the third place finisher in the PCAL’s Mission Divsion.

Martinez earned the complete-game win.
