SALINAS >> Quarterback Jack Dagan rushed for a pair of touchdowns, including a 50-yarder in the fourth quarter, and San Lorenzo Valley High’s unbeaten football team beat Gonzales 22-8 in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division game at Alisal High on Saturday night.

Riley Johnson converted a two-point conversion following the Cougars’ second touchdown and scored a touchdown with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars (7-0, 3-0), off to their best start since going 13-0 in 2002, and Stevenson (5-2, 4-0) are the only two unbeaten teams remaining in division play.

“We knew is was going to be a tough road game,” Cougars coach David Grant said. “Gonzales always plays tough. We were up 7-0 at half, but knew we would need a least two more scores to win the game. Their QB is pretty good dual threat.

“I was really impressed with our O-line and the way we were able protect our QB in the pocket and especially the way we were able to run the football to finish the game.”

Cougars sophomore running back Justin Griffis rushed for 115 yards. Jordan Renteria had two catches for 70 yards.

The Cougars’ defense forced Gonzales to turn the ball over on downs twice in the fourth quarter.

SLV defensive end Olin Bates had a fumble recovery in the first quarter. Jacob Hardin made eight tackles, including a sack. Haden Woolworth also recorded a sack.

“Our secondary had several hard hits resulting in broken up passes,” Grant said.

SLV hosts Santa Cruz (1-7, 1-3) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Gonzales drops to 3-3, 1-1.
