Boston is in for a muggy humid, hot week, according to National Weather Service forecasts, with more flooding possible as the week goes on.
“If you had described this week in one word, it’s going to be tropical,” said NWS meteorologist Caitlyn Mensch. “Starting from the earlier parts of this week through Friday, it’s going to feel very humid. Just lots of moisture is going to stay intact throughout the entire week. And in addition to that, we will see a trend in warming temperatures as we head towards midweek.”
On Monday, the Boston region is expected to kick off a mostly cloudy day with patchy fog before 7 a.m., NWS forecasts show. Temperatures are forecasted to reach a high in the mid-80s.
A low chance of rain and thunderstorms appears in the later afternoon Monday, forecasts show. Though the Boston area could see some precipitation, the storms should concentrate in the western region of Massachusetts, Mensch said.
“There is a risk for a strong to severe storm in Western Massachusetts,” Mensch said. “And we also have just tons of moisture available. As a lot of people have seen lately, any storm has been pretty capable of heavy downpours and even some localized flash flooding. Because of that, we are seeing a risk for some heavier rainfall and even some potential for some flash flooding in Western Massachusetts, areas like Springfield, but not so much Boston.”
Heading into the mid-week Tuesday through Thursday, temperatures are likely to reach sweltering highs, according to forecasts. On Tuesday, the high is expected to reach the upper 80s, NWS states.
By Wednesday and Thursday, NWS forecasts the highs are expected to hit the low 90s.
“Doesn’t seem all too bad, temperature wise,” said Mensch. “But when you add that added effect of the humidity, by Wednesday and Thursday, it’s gonna be so humid, it’ll make it feel like it’s between 95 and lower 100s.”
There will likely be heat advisories issued for the couple days around midweek, Mensch said.
“Stay cool, especially midweek,” said Mensch. “Stay hydrated. Take it easy. Take frequent breaks if you are outside, and try to avoid any exercise during the worst of the heat.”
Precipitation-wise, low chances for showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue through mid-week, forecasts show.
“Tuesday, Wednesday could see a couple showers, but they’re not expecting any widespread activity,” said Mensch. “But as we head into Thursday and Friday, it’s a similar pattern to what we see (Monday,) where each afternoon is going to have a risk for scattered showers and thunderstorms.”
Mensch noted it’s far out to know if the rain will be severe later in the week, “but given how much moisture there is, we are currently monitoring it for some heavy rain threat as well” in the Boston area.
Residents should have a way to receive flooding warnings, Mensch noted, advising people to turn on receive emergency alerts on their cell phones.
