Kudos to Chico E-R editor Mike Wolcott for his “Open oetter (and invitation) to Gov. Newsom” on Sunday April 27th. It seems to me that Mr. Wolcott has stumbled on that magical formula of, “you can please all of the people some of the time.” The “people” in this context is the people of the north state.
Many of us live in the north state for the relative solitude and serenity it offers, but that physical detachment from the rest of the state often means we are under represented by our supposed representatives.
Rep. LaMalfa refuses to have a town hall meeting in purple Chico. He knows he has a lock on the ruby red north state. A town hall doesn’t benefit him at all. Gov. Newsom is averse to engaging with local media on his infrequent jaunts here. He has a lock on all the big cities with their overwhelming abundance of blue voters. Why risk confrontation in an area that has few voters?
However, according to editor Wolcott, Rep. LaMalfa said, “I tell him (Newsom), ‘Come have a town hall with me.’ ” Thus, blue people get their town hall, red people get to confront Newsom and it all happens in purple Chico.
Should be colorful. Bring it on.
