Highlighted by a Jandro Torres home run, the Woodland Christian varsity baseball team remained a perfect 7-0 in Sierra Delta League play following an exciting 19-8 home win over Rio Vista on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cardinals (11-1, 7-0 SDL) came into the matchup in hot form, winners of eight in a row, including a perfect start to the league campaign.

Three series sweeps over Lindhurst, Vacaville Christian, and Highlands, in which the Cardinals have only given up two total runs, highlight their dominance at the start of the season. Other key wins include an 11-5 win over Vanden on Feb. 20, a 10-6 win over El Dorado on Feb. 27, a 14-10 thriller over Kelseyville on March 8, and an 11-1 win over Colusa on March 10.

Their only loss so far was a series split to Vanden, where they lost the home game 8-3.

Leading the way at the plate for the Cardinals have been juniors Jordan Villanuva and Jayden and Armaan Badhesha and seniors Gary Mann, Jandro Torres and Jeffrey Nannini.

Villanuva leads the team in runs (19) and hits (19) and is second in RBI (14). Jayden leads the way with 19 RBI while putting up the second most hits (16).

After allowing an uncharacteristic 7 runs in the top of the first inning, the Cardinals roared back with 11 runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 11-7 lead.

They’d go on to score 3 runs in both the bottom of the second and third innings to take a 17-8 lead, one run short of the mercy rule at five innings.

They activated the rule in the bottom of the fourth inning with 2 more runs to take a 19-8 lead and close the game out in the top of the fifth.

Torres had a fine day at the plate, hitting a home run and a single, racking 4 RBI. Mann and sophomore Billy Flowers both scored a game-high 3 runs while also picking up a hit and a run scored.

On the mound, Mann came into the game early with one out in the bottom of the first and escaped unscathed. He went on to pitch another three innings, striking out 10 batters while only giving up 1 hit. Armaan came in to close the game out, striking out 3.

The Cardinals will travel to Rio Americano on Wednesday for a non-league game before resuming SDL play with a trip to Rio Vista for the second game of the series. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
