College football’s spring transfer portal window opened Wednesday, with hundreds of players around the country taking the first step to find a new school.

More than 1,000 players put their names into the portal Wednesday, including a few Colorado Buffaloes. The 10-day portal window closes on April 25.

Former Buffs running back Isaiah Augustave and safety Savion Riley were the biggest names to go into the portal from CU, but neither was a surprise. Both left the team earlier this spring.

True freshman receiver Adrian Wilson also put his name into the portal, only about three months after arriving on campus as an early enrollee. The 6-foot-2, 165-pound receiver from Weiss (Texas) High School was a four-star recruit in the 2025 class. He caught 47 passes for 985 yards and 14 touchdowns last fall as a senior, but was seemingly behind other freshmen receivers on the roster.

Walk-on defensive lineman Chijoke Nwankwo, the younger brother of former Buffs defensive lineman Chidozie Nwankwo, also put his name into the portal.

Run game focus

CU is certainly aware it has finished last in the country in rushing the past two years, and it has been a focus this spring.

“We’re practicing that, so it’s not much deeper than that,” offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said. “We’re trying to develop a foundational run game against our defense, and so we’re putting a special effort on running the ball with the runners and then all the things we did last year.

“I think college obviously incorporates the run/pass option type stuff. So we’re trying to get our offense to be a little deeper and a little wider, and do more things next year.”

Augustave led the Buffs in rushing last year, albeit with only 384 yards. The other four scholarship backs from last year are still on board: Dallan Hayden, Charlie Offerdahl, Micah Welch and Brandon Hood.

“I think their role will kind of unfold further as we go through it,” Shurmur said. “I think they all warrant being in there and getting touches. I feel like they’ve developed really well, and the guys that are out there practicing, I feel like they’ve improved each week and I think that’s the important thing. You just want to keep putting one more pebble on the pile.”

With only four scholarship running backs, however, it’s likely the Buffs will try to add one or two more through the transfer portal.

Notable

Senior defensive lineman Tavian Coleman, a transfer from Texas State, has had a solid spring. “He’s gonna win with quickness,” defensive coordinator Robert Livingston said. “He’s done a really good job with movement. So we’ll kind of see what we do and how we do it with him.” … CU returns to practice Thursday and will wrap up spring practices Saturday with the Black & Gold scrimmage at Folsom Field.
