DETROIT >> Casey Mize, in his second season back after undergoing surgeries on his elbow and back and missing nearly two years, is expected to be selected to the American League All-Star team as a replacement player, a source told The Detroit News.
The source was not authorized to speak publicly about the decision.
Mize, the first overall pick in the draft in 2018, has posted a 9-2 record with a 2.63 ERA and 1.179 WHIP in 15 starts.
He will join teammates Tarik Skubal, Zach McKinstry and starters Riley Greene, Javier Baez and Gleyber Torres in Atlanta on Tuesday.
The Tigers last had six representatives in the All-Star Game in 2013. The last time they had two homegrown pitchers in the game was in 1985 — Jack Morris and Dan Petry.
The official announcement was expected to come from Major League Baseball before the Tigers opened a series with the Mariners at Comerica Park Friday night.
