A Gary man, who was charged in the death of a man who’d made advances toward him over the weekend, allegedly has shown no remorse, according to court records.
A witness told police that they, Markcovic Stacy and James Vardano Jr. were asleep around 1 a.m. Friday in a residence in the 3900 block of Polk Street, where Stacy awoke to Vardano standing over his bed, court records said. The witness said Stacy, 29, texted them about Varnado, and they told him to change rooms, records said.Varnado, 39, then called the witness and said Stacy was outside his room with a knife, court records said. When they went there, they saw Stacy allegedly saw him with the knife standing over Varnado, records said.
Varnado, who was wounded, called Gary police, who took him to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus, records said. He was later transferred to University of Chicago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from multiple sharp force injuries at 9 a.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Stacy claimed he was drinking with friends, and when they left around 11 pm. June 19, he went to sleep in his room. He then awoke to someone touching him inappropriately without his consent. When he realized it was Varnado — who’d made advances toward Stacy before despite not being interested in men — he got angry and then texted the witness, who said they’d deal with Varnado — their roommate — in the morning, court records said.
Stacy, however, went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and went to Varnado’s room to confront him. He thrust the knife at Varnado several times because he wanted to hurt him but wasn’t expecting to stab his abdomen, records said.
Stacy told a detective he “was not remorseful” for what he’d done, according to court records.
Stacy is in custody at the Lake County Jail and will appear before a judge July 2 for his initial appearance, court records said.
