When and where: Friday, diving competition starts at 4:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. Saturday, swim events start at 8 a.m.
The scouting report: Multiple local girls swim programs are slated to attend the Mustang Invite at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center this weekend, including CHSAA preseason Class 4A No. 2 Broomfield, No. 3 Monarch and 5A No. 8 Legacy.
The Eagles and Coyotes — who finished a respective second and fourth at last year’s 4A state meet — are both off to nice starts this winter season.
Broomfield won the 11-team Candy Cane Invite in Windsor last month and already has a number of top times in the state. Junior Ridley Hagerman has the state’s only sub-5-minute time in the 500 freestyle (4:57.91) and is second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.00). Teammate Ellie Foulke, also a junior, has the third-fastest mark in the 500 free (5:06.49). Both of them are a part of the state’s fifth-fastest 400 free relay (3:39.52).
Monarch, meanwhile, finished above the Eagles at the 10-team Lightning Invite last month, placing third. The Coyotes return 4A champions in Eliza Lennox (50 and 100 free) and Audrey Shambo (100 breaststroke). Lennox currently has the classification’s best time in the 50 freestyle (23.74), while Shambo has 4A’s best in the breaststroke (1:04.16).
Legacy is also expected to be there. The Lightning finished seventh in 5A a year ago and started this season with a win at the nine-team Future Classic at VMAC last month. They’re led by sophomore Emee Henkel, who has the state’s third-best mark in the breaststroke (1:04.78) and fifth-fastest time in the 200 IM (2:06.71).
Longmont will be there, too. Trojans freshman Alessia Daelli has a 4A top-20 time in the 100 freestyle (56.81).
The two-day invite is set to begin Friday, with the 11-dive competition starting at 4 p.m. Swim finals will be Saturday, with the first event at 8 a.m.
More teams are expected to join the competition this week.
