Scotts Valley Track Club’s relay teams posted three top-10 finishes, including a pair of top-five showings, at the four-day 2025 Nike Outdoor Nationals & USATF U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Scotts Valley TC (Rayne Leonetti, Sarah Drees, Dylan Turzak, and Ava Decleve) took third out of 21 teams in the Girls 4×200-meter Emerging Elite relay in a Falcons’ school-record time of 1 minute, 45.36 seconds on Friday. Sherwood TC in Oregon won in 1:44.61, and Aptos TC (Siena Black, Ella Boyes, Izzy Graff, and Bella Hartnett) took sixth in a Mariners’ school-record 1:46.32.

Scotts Valley TC (Anton Khomenko, Evan Wong, Zach Shilling, and William Shilling) took fourth in the Boys 4×100 final in the Emerging Elite division on Sunday. They finished in 43.19 — .07 of a second behind the quartet’s school record, set at the 2025 Central Coast Section Semifinals on May. 17.

They took second out of 41 teams in the prelims in 43.45 on Saturday.

Eli Fitchen-Young of Santa Cruz, who will compete for Duke University in the fall, took fifth out 57 runners in the Boys 1 Mile (Championship) GARMIN race in 4:05.62 to break his Cardinals’ school record on Sunday. His previous best mark was 4:15.84, set at the 2024 Nike Outdoor Nationals.

Scotts Valley TC (Khomenko, Shilling, Wong, and Shilling) took seventh out of 21 teams in the Boys 4×200 Emerging Elite relay in a Falcons’ school-record 1:32.53 on Friday. Aptos TC (Damian Suchil, Scott Catesi, Deric Moren, and Casey MacConnell) took ninth in a Mariners’ school-record 1:32.69.

Aptos TC (Boyes, Black, Graff, and Hartnett) took 10th out 34 teams in the Girls 4x400m (Emerging Elite) in 4:07.18 on Sunday.

Scotts Valley TC (Shilling, Shilling, Khomenko, and William von Haunalter) took 11th in the Boys 1,600 Sprint Medley Relay (Emerging Elite) race in 3:45.80, the third-best time in school history, on Friday.

Logan Brantley of Aptos TC, who will compete at UC Davis, took 14th in the Boys Hammer Throw Emerging Elite with a throw of 157-3, the second-best mark in Mariners’ history; 26th in the Boys Shot Put Championship with a throw of 55-11.25 on Saturday; and 23rd in the Boys Discus Emerging Elite with a throw of 151-3 on Friday,

Decleve, an incoming senior who is committed to UCLA, also competed in the Girls 800 (Championship) GARMIN race and placed 17th out of 58 runners in 2:11.27 Saturday.

MacConnell also took 18th in the Boys High Jump (Emerging Elite) with a height of 6-0.5 on Saturday.

Scotts Valley TC (Drees, Leonetti, Turzak, and Violet McCutchen) took 19th in the Girls 1,600 SMR (Championship) race in 4:24.49 on Friday.Aptos TC (Suchil, MacConnell, Catesi, and Moren) took 22nd in the Boys 4×100 relay (Emerging Elite) relay prelims in 44.52 on Saturday.

Aptos TC (Black, Hartnett, Graff, and Myla Appleby) took 26th in the Girls 4×100 prelims (Championship) in 50.86 on Saturday.

Cruz Snell of Scotts Valley TC took 27th in the Boys 200 (Middle School) in 24.55 on Friday, and 18th in the Boys Long Jump (Middle School) division with a distance of 17-2 and 35th (12.07) in the Boys 100m (Middle School) prelims on Thursday.

Ben ComiIang of Soquel TC took 27th in the Boys Triple Jump (Championship) with a distance of 42-7.5 on Sunday.

Appleby also took 56th in the Girls 100 prelims(Freshman) in 13.45 on Thursday.

Boyes also took 57th in the Girls 400 Hurdles (Emerging Elite) in 1:08.93 on Sunday.

Trail running

Broken Arrow Skyrace >> More than a half dozen thrill-seekers from Santa Cruz County competed in the Broken Arrow Skyrace at Palisades Tahoe, which featured nine races of varying distances and difficulty Thursday through Sunday. All the races featured time cutoffs.

Santa Cruz’s Jennifer Schaffhouser, 37, took third place in the Triple Crown standings after completing the 46k, Ascent, and 23k races in a combined time of 8:34:32.

She took 75th out of 163 finishers in the 46k race in 5:28:46 on Saturday. Thirty-two runners, including two from Santa Cruz, didn’t complete the course, which featured 9,000 feet of vertical gain and loss, in the 12-hour cutoff.

Schaffhouser also took 107th in the 2.15-mile Ascent race in 34:08 on Friday and 85th in the 23k in 2:31:37 on Sunday.

Santa Cruz’s Paige Kouba, 31, took 20th out of 498 runners in the 11k in 1:01:31 on Saturday. The course featured 1,950 feet of vertical gain.

Santa Cruz’s Pierre Meunier, 35, took eighth out of 463 runners in the 18k race in 1:46:59 on Friday. The course, changed due to heavy winds, featured 2,520 feet of vertical gain.

Santa Cruz’s Hunter Hartshorne, 27, took 48th out of 453 runners in the Ascent race in 30:09. The course, altered due to heavy winds, featured 1,800 feet of vertical gain.

Felton’s Jennifer Germann, 35, took 24th out of 85 runners in the Iron Face Challenge in 1:14:22 on Friday. Santa Cruz’s Andrew Le, 36, took 31st in 1:20:01; Soquel’s Andrew Giorgianni, 48, took 41st in 1:29:25, and Watsonville’s Edgar Peralta, 42, took 68th in 1:56:37.

Golden State Trail Run >> Six county runners posted top-25 finishes at the Golden State Trail Run at Fort Ord National Monument in Monterey on Saturday.

Santa Cruz’s Kees Van Der Meer, 19, took first out of 42 runners in the 35k race in 2:51:09. Santa Cruz’s Isabel Sanchez, 22, was the top female and placed fifth overall in 2:59:14.

Santa Cruz’s Jason Menden, 30, took fourth out of 65 runners in the 50k race in 4:28:25. Watsonville’s Kevin Cisneros, 31, took 13th in 5:28:52.

Watsonville’s John Nelson, 33, took 22nd out 115 runners in the half marathon in 2:00:17.

Watsonville’s Mae Nelson, 34, took 24th out of 67 runners in the 10k race in 1:06:44.

Malaspina transfers >> Alexa Malaspina, a MVC alumna, has transferred to NCAA Division I University of Utah after shining as a freshman goalie at D-II University of Colorado Colorado Springs

Malaspina made 17 starts last season for the Mountain Lions (10-8-2, 7-5) and recorded a 1.20 goals-against average. She made 60 saves for a 0.750 save percentage.

The Utes went 8-6-5 last season under coach Hideki Nakada, 5-3-3 in the Big 12 Conference.

Men’s soccer

Edgar transfers >> UC Santa Cruz announced that defender Avery Edgar, a Soquel alum, has transferred from NCAA D-II Cal State University Monterey Bay to join the D-III Banana Slugs.

Edgar started in five of the 18 games he played as a redshirt sophomore last season for the Otters (8-4-6, 5-2-4), who took fifth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

He joins a UCSC team that featured just three seniors last season and went 6-2-9.

College softball

Gomez transfers >> Aaliysah Gomez, a redshirt freshman infielder out of St. Francis High, has transferred from South Dakota State University to fellow NCAA Division I Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi.

The Tigers went 29-25 overall in 2025 under coach Kevin Montgomery, 15-9 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
