A 42-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of stealing hundreds of pieces of mail, including sensitive financial and government documents, from addresses across Riverside and Los Angeles counties.

The accused mail thief also allegedly stole 36 access cards, such as EBT, debit, credit, and insurance cards, linked to 25 people, authorities said.

On Wednesday around 4:45 a.m., Hemet police officers responded to the 1300 block of Division Court for a report of a suspicious tan/gold 1993 Jeep Cherokee parked near community mailboxes. Police said a man, identified as Naythan Story, was seated in the driver’s seat, unconscious.

After rousing him, officers learned he was on probation and detained him.

While talking with Story, officers noticed a lock-picking tool on the ground near the car’s driver’s door, in addition to other “suspicious items” visible inside the Jeep, including a socket wrench, access cards that did not belong to Story, and a brass key with a mark that read “USPS Property,” a police news release said.

Officers subsequently searched the car and found a clear baggie with almost two grams of methamphetamine, hundreds of pieces of mail, and a total of 36 access cards, according to the release. The mail came from addresses across Hemet, Temecula, Murrieta, Winchester, Menifee, South Gate, Compton, and other areas, according to the news release. Some of the credit and debit cards belong to people who police confirmed were recent fraud victims.

Story was arrested and booked on five charges, including possession of stolen property and possession of access cards with intent to defraud.

Police are working with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to look into follow-up investigations that may be related to the case.

Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity around mailboxes or vehicles parked in unusual locations. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Hemet Police Department Detective Aguila at 951-765-2423 or by email at paguila@hemetpd.gov
