




GILROY >> Nearly two dozen athletes from Santa Cruz County advanced from the Central Coast Section Track and Field Semifinals at Gilroy High on Saturday to next week’s championship.
The CCS Finals will be held at Gilroy on Saturday. Field events begin at 3 p.m. and running events begin at 4:45 p.m.
Aptos High senior Logan Brantley posted the longest distance in the discus, throwing a personal-best 175 feet, 10 inches, and had the sixth-best throw (56-1.50) in the shot put to qualify for the finals in two events.
His discus throw is second on the Mariners’ all-time list, passing Doug Sampson’s 2000 mark of 171-5, and only behind Hans Van Dale’s 2001 distance of 178-8.
Santa Cruz senior Eli Fitchen-Young posted the fastest qualifying mark (9:08.48) in the 3,200.
Soquel senior Logan Walters was one of 10 pole vaulters to clear 13-0 and move on. Two others cleared 12-6 to advance.
Walters, who won four individual events at the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Championships two weeks ago, dropped down to two events at CCS. He fell shy of advancing in the 100 after running 11.26.Several athletes won multiple events at the SCCAL meet but reduced their workload to better their marks and chances of moving to the next level of competition.
Scotts Valley junior Aaron Weiss was fourth fastest in the 800 with a PR (1:54.95) to climb from fifth to third on the Falcons’ all-time list, and MVC junior Conor Gilliam was ninth fastest (1:57.94) to advance.
Pajaro Vallley senior Izaak Ocampo recorded the fourth-best distance in the long jump (22-1.25), and Aptos senior Casey MacConnell was tied for sixth (21-8.25) to move on.
Watsonville senior Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar recorded the fifth-best distance in the triple jump (44-7.25), and Soquel junior Ben ComiIang leaped 44-4 for the seventh-best mark to move on.
Soquel advanced two athletes in the high jump. senior Nolen Westfall cleared 5-10 on his second attempt and 6-0 on his first attempt to qualify for the final and stopped jumping. After clearing 5-8 on his first jump, senior Tomas Church cleared 5-10 and 6-0 on his third jumps to move on. MacConnell cleared 5-10 but missed on three chances at 6-0 and finished 13th, one spot shy of advancing.
Aptos sophomore Sam Hansen (4:16.73) posted the seventh-best mark in the 1,600 and junior teammate Brady Bliesner (4:19.50, a slight PR) followed with the 10th best mark to move on.
Bliesner and Hansen teamed with Anthony Sandford-Carroll and Andrew Pursley in the 4×800 relay and moved on with a 8:11.45, the 11th best qualifying mark.
Watsonville junior Lisandro Pantoja had the 11th-best throw in the discus (154-02), and moved on.
Wildcatz freshman Ricardo Lopez-Ramirez will compete in the 100 Para/Ambulatory, 200 Para/Ambulatory, and Para/Ambulatory shot put.
In the girls’ action, Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve posted the fastest qualifying mark in the 800 (2:12.70). Santa Cruz senior Heidi Green was seventh best in 2:14.36, a PR by just over a half second, to move on.
Archbishop Mitty senior Evangeline Marheineke, a Santa Cruz resident, posted the second-best time in the 3,200 (11:01.97). MVC senior Kylie Brunelli also advanced with the seventh best mark (11:09.14).
San Lorenzo Valley senior Orea Pollock cleared 5-0 in the high jump to advance.
Santa Cruz sophomore Joy Roberts was seventh fastest in the 100 (12.44), a PR to match Emma O’Regan’s 2015 school record and make the final. In the 200, Roberts posted the 10th-best time (25.77), which didn’t make the cut.
Scotts Valley (Dylan Turzak, Jennifer Brownfield, Violet McCutchen, and Decleve) missed moving on in the 4×800 relay. The Falcons took 13th out of 29 teams in 10:01.76, but the final team to advance, Mountain View, moved on after running a 9:57.65.
