Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner has accepted a three-month ban in a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency over his two positive doping tests.

WADA had challenged a decision last year by the International Tennis Integrity Agency not to suspend Sinner for what it judged was accidental contamination by a banned anabolic steroid last March.

Sinner’s explanation — that trace amounts of Clostebol in his doping sample was due to a massage from a trainer who used the substance after cutting his own finger — had been accepted.

The 23-year-old Italian, who won the Australian Open in January, will be eligible to compete in the next Grand Slam. The French Open begins May 25.

Anisimova wins Qatar open Final >> Amanda Anisimova won the Qatar Open for her third career title and first since 2022.

Anisimova beat former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-3 in a final disrupted twice by showers.

After the second rain delay, Anisimova won the last three games to become the first American to win the Doha title since Monica Seles in 2002.

Golf

Rodgers takes the lead at the Genesis Invitational >> Patrick Rodgers played some of his best golf when golf’s best were starting to falter. It ended with a 4-under 68 and a one-shot lead going into a final round at Torrey Pines with Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy lagging well behind.

The only downer for Rodgers on a tough day in the sunshine was hitting a gap wedge into the water on the par-4 18th and having to scramble for bogey.

He was at 8-under 208, one shot ahead of Denny McCarty (71). Ludvig Aberg, who had an ace on the par-3 third hole, had a 70 and was another shot behind.

Racing

Kligerman disqualified for ‘too-low truck’ after win >> Full-time television analyst and part-time NASCAR driver Parker Kligerman claimed the checkered flag for the Truck Series season opener and promptly planted it in the grass by the Daytona International Speedway logo.

It’s a winning tradition that journeyman Kligerman had done for all three of his truck wins, the first back at Talladega in 2012. So it seemed appropriate for what Kligerman called the “biggest win of my entire life” in a raucous postrace celebration.

But it was a short party: NASCAR disqualified Kligerman when his truck was found to be too low in a postrace inspection. Corey Heim was declared the new winner, and the adjustment to the standings gave actor Frankie Muniz his first career top-10 finish.

Hockey

Sweden tops Finland in 4 nations face-off >> Mikael Granlund scored the overtime winner, and Finland beat Sweden 4-3 in an instant classic, back-and-forth game between the bitter rivals at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Granlund scored 1:49 into 3-on-3 OT, sending fans in Finland’s blue and white at Bell Centre to the exits cheering and chanting, “Suomi!”

Anton Lundell and Mikko Rantanen also scored for Finland, and Kevin Lankinen made 21 saves in his debut at the NHL-run international tournament, including a pad stop on Mika Zibanejad seconds into overtime.

Baseball

Ohtani throws first bullpen of Spring Training >> Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani threw his first bullpen of spring training, taking a step toward possibly pitching for the first time since 2023.

The reigning World Series champion and National League MVP has not pitched in the big leagues since Aug. 23, 2023, with the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander later had elbow surgery that limited him to a hitting role during his first season with the Dodgers in 2024.

After throwing on flat ground earlier in the week, he was looking forward to being on the mound in a bullpen session.

Former White Sox All-Star Jenks treated for stomach cancer >> Bobby Jenks, a two-time All-Star closer and World Series champion with the Chicago White Sox, is being treated for stomach cancer.

Jenks shared his condition from a Portugal hospital bed in an interview with MLB.com on Saturday, and the White Sox later sent their best wishes via social media.

“We stand with you, Bobby Jenks,” the team wrote in an Instagram post.

Skiing

Rast wins Women’s slalom >> Swiss skier Camille Rast won the women’s slalom at the Alpine world championships.

Mikaela Shiffrin finished fifth and missed out on what would have been the American’s record-setting 16th career medal from the worlds. She shares the best mark with German skier Christl Cranz, who won 15 medals in the 1930s.
