


Four Woodland-area seniors will compete in the annual Optimist High School All-Star games this upcoming week in Sacramento.
The Woodland High School varsity softball team will be represented by two players at the 46th Annual Optimist High School Softball All-Star games. The matchups will take place this upcoming Wednesday, June 7, at Capital Christian High School in Sacramento.
Outfielder Isabel Giroux and second baseman Giselle Martinez will represent the Wolves at the yearly senior showcase. The two Woodland players have been assigned to the small school’s south team.
Giroux led the Wolves in stolen bases (13), and runs scored (22) this season. She also ranked third in runs batted in (20). Martinez ranked second in runs (20) and third in triples (1). Woodland’s season came to an end on May 11 with a 12-8 loss at crosstown rival, Woodland Christian.
The Pioneer High School varsity baseball team will have two players competing at the 52nd Annual Optimist High School Baseball All-Star games. The contests will be held next Sunday, June 11, at the Army Depot Park in Sacramento.
The Patriots will be represented by their No. 1 batterymates, pitcher Carson Timothy and catcher Ryan Pearson, at the annual All-Star game. The two Pioneer seniors will also be playing for the small school’s south team.
Timothy was the Patriots’ leader in several statistical categories. The UC Santa Barbara signee was first in runs (32), hits (31), stolen bases (15), doubles (6) and earned run average (0.65) for Pioneer. Pearson ranked third amongst the Patriots in runs (19) and RBI (16).
The Patriots’ season came to an end this week with a 3-1 loss at Carmel on Tuesday in the first round of the CIF Division III Regionals. Both Timothy and Pearson will be playing baseball at the next level in college. Timothy will be suiting up for the Gauchos while Pearson is set to attend Butte College.
“These Optimist All-Star games provide the top senior athletes of Greater Sacramento the venue to showcase their skills and prowess,” stated Optimist Sports Director John Yoshikawa. “Their selection is to honor them and their schools, and reflects the culmination of their hard work, diligence and excellence in this sport and school, as well as their coach’s commitment towards their player’s endeavors. The proceeds from this event will solely be used for youth programs and projects in the Greater Sacramento areas.”
The small schools softball game at Capital Christian will start Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The small schools baseball game at the Army Depot Park will start Sunday at 4 p.m.
General admission for both events is $10. Seniors 65 and older cost $8, students are $5, children aged 5-12 are $3 and kids under 5 are free.
