Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has a left quad strain and will be out at least two weeks.

Coach Stephanie White told reporters Monday she wasn’t sure exactly when Clark was injured but was told after Saturday’s game Clark had “something going on with her leg.”

Clark was not seen with her teammates at the end of practice and was not available for comment.

Team officials said additional updates will be provided as circumstances warrant.

Last season’s WNBA rookie of the year finished with 18 points and 10 assists in a 90-88 loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday.

Raiders make Cole highest-paid punter

Two-time All-Pro AJ Cole agreed to a four-year, $15.8 million extension with the Las Vegas Raiders that makes him the highest-paid punter in football.

A person familiar with the deal said that it includes $11 million in guaranteed money and his incentives that could increase the value of the deal.

Cole had one year remaining on his contract that was set to pay him $3.3 million in base salary this season before reaching an extension to keep him under contract through the 2029 season.

Angels sign Dodgers castoff Taylor to deal

The Los Angeles Angels signed Chris Taylor to a one-year contract, keeping the veteran utilityman in Southern California after he was cut by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Taylor, who turns 35 in August, hit .200 (7 for 35) in 28 games for the Dodgers before he was released by the World Series champions on May 18.

Taylor’s contract with the Angels is worth $518,925, a prorated share of the $760,000 major league minimum.

The Dodgers are on the hook for the rest of his $13 million salary, plus the $4 million buyout of the 2026 club option in his $60 million, four-year contract.

Marlins place Hill on IL, call up top prospect Mesa

The Miami Marlins placed outfielder Derek Hill on the 10-day injured list and brought up Victor Mesa Jr. from Triple-A Jacksonville.

Hill has a sprained left wrist. He robbed Nolan Schanuel with a terrific diving catch for the final out of the eighth inning in Sunday’s 3-0 victory at the Angels.

Hill is batting .233 with two homers and five RBIs in 23 games this season.

The 23-year-old Mesa is one of the team’s top prospects. The outfielder hit .300 (6 for 20) in six games with Jacksonville before his promotion.

Trio penalized after Indianapolis 500

Indianapolis 500 runner-up Marcus Ericsson was penalized to the rear of the 33-car field along with Andretti Global teammate Kyle Kirkwood.

Their cars were found to have unapproved modifications in post-race inspection Sunday that could have helped the aerodynamic efficiency of both of their cars.

Ericsson will now be credited with a 31st-place finish and Kirkwood, who had finished sixth, has been relegated to 32nd.

Callum Ilott’s car for Prema Racing was found to have a different issue in postrace inspection. He forfeited his 12th-place finish and was credited with last place.

Ole Miss junior La Sasso wins NCAA men’s title

Ole Miss junior Michael La Sasso overcame a pair of double bogeys with a pair of birdies on his back nine that carried him to an even-par 72 to the win the NCAA men’s title and help send the Rebels into the team portion of the championship.

La Sasso finished at 11-under 277 for a two-shot victory over Phichaksn Miachon of Texas A&M, making him only the second Ole Miss golfer to win an NCAA title.

The victory sends the 21-year-old La Sasso to Oakmont in two weeks for the U.S. Open, and to the Masters next April.

Vanderbilt nets top seed for NCAA tourney

Vanderbilt, which gave up just three runs over three games in the SEC Tournament, was awarded the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and was among a record 13 teams from the conference to be selected to the 64-team field.

The tournament opens Friday with 16 double-elimination regionals. Winners advance to eight best-of-three super regionals. Those winners move on to the College World Series in Omaha beginning June 13.

Vanderbilt has won eight straight games and 13 of its past 16 to earn the No. 1 seed for the second time, and first since 2007.

Alonso officially takes over as Real Madrid coach

Xabi Alonso officially took over Real Madrid’s coaching job, vowing to follow in the footsteps of former coach Carlo Ancelotti and saying he has “a good feeling” about the team’s future under his command.

Madrid announced the hiring of Alonso on Sunday, a day after the club paid tribute to Ancelotti at the team’s final Spanish league match of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Ancelotti is taking over the Brazil job after four mostly successful seasons in his second stint with the club.

Alonso said it felt good returning home to Madrid, where he won six titles as a player from 2009-2014.

Russian swimmer receives 2-year doping suspension

Russian Olympic swimmer Valeriia Salamatina was banned for two years for doping, the International Testing Agency.

Salamatina placed fifth with the Russian women in a storied 4x200 meters freestyle relay at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

All three medalists — China took gold, followed by the United States and Australia — broke the previous world record.

She tested positive for the diuretic furosemide in an unannounced sample taken at training in March.
