Dominican University made history Thursday afternoon as the school became the first NCAA DII women’s lacrosse program in California to host a NCAA regular season match. The weather didn’t cooperate, but the Penguins opened the season with a convincing 18-7 victory over the Purple Knights of Saint Michael’s College.

Junior Morgan Newkirk led the Penguins with five goals, while junior Taylor Pieri added two goals and six assists. Olivia Johnson finished with four assists, a couple of forced turnovers, and two goals.

Girls soccer

Thursday’s scheduled MCAL semifinal games — Branson at Redwood and Marin Catholic at Tam — were postponed for safety considerations due to the rainstorm. The games have been rescheduled for Friday.

Women’s basketball

Samantha Aban came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points as College of Marin bested Los Medanos, 66-32, on Wednesday evening. Sierra Calantas added 11 points and five rebounds for the Mariners (15-11, 10-4 BVC).
