Smith joins exclusive club as No. 6 Purdue dominates Marquette

INDIANAPOLIS >> Oscar Cluff made all nine of his shots and finished with a season-high 22 points, and Braden Smith reached another milestone with 10 more assists to lead No. 6 Purdue past Marquette 79-59.

It took Smith only 12 seconds to find Fletcher Loyer for a 3-pointer to become the second Division I men’s basketball player to join the 1,500-point, 850-assist, 550-rebound club. D.J. Cooper was the first to do it during his career at Ohio from 2009-13.

Smith had seven points and five rebounds to increase his career numbers to 1,515 points, 859 assists and 759 rebounds. Cluff had 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Loyer scored 15 points.

The Boilermakers (10-1, 2-0 Big Ten) have won two straight since an embarrassing 23-point home loss to then-No. 10 Iowa State last weekend.

Royce Parham had 19 points to lead Marquette (5-6), which lost for the second straight Saturday by 20 points. Chase Ross added 10 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot only 8% from the field and were a dismal 8 of 31 from 3-point range.

No. 7 Houston 99, New Orleans 57 >> Kingston Flemings, Chris Cenac Jr., Chase McCarty and Mercy Miller each scored 15 points, and No. 7 Houston won its fourth straight, beating New Orleans.

Flemings and Cenac, both freshmen, combined to shoot 11 of 19 from the field for Houston (10-1), which won its tenth straight at home and has won 22 straight nonconference home games. The Cougars had 10 of 11 players score, and nine finished with at least six points.

No. 9 Michigan State 76, Penn State 72 >> Divine Ugochukwu scored a career-high 23 points and No. 9 Michigan State overcame a sloppy performance to beat Penn State.

Jaxon Kohler posted his fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Carson Cooper added 10 points for the Spartans (9-1, 2-0 Big Ten), who committed a season-high 17 turnovers and trailed for long stretches in both halves.

No. 11 Louisville 99, Memphis 73 >> Ryan Conwell had 17 points and reserve Adrian Wooley scored 15 as he and Kasean Pryor alternated making six of Louisville’s seven consecutive 3-pointers during a first-half surge that rocketed the No. 11 Cardinals past Memphis.

The Cardinals (9-1) converted 18 of 35 attempts from long range, second to their 20 made 3s against NJIT on Nov. 26. Their total included 12 of 22 from deep before halftime, during which Wooley (5 of 8) and Pryor (3 of 3, 11 points) took turns knocking down shots to break the game open.

No. 23 Nebraska 83, No. 13 Illinois 80 >> Jamarques Lawrence hit a 3-point shot with less than a second remaining to give No. 23 Nebraska a win over No. 13 Illinois.

The undefeated Huskers (11-0, 2-0 Big Ten) are off to the best start in program history. They won 10 in a row to start the 1977-78 season. Tomislav Ivicic’s 3-pointer — his only points of the game — with 17 seconds to go deadlocked the game at 80-all for the Illini (8-3, 1-1), who trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half and 14 points in the first half.

No. 14 North Carolina 80, USC Upstate 62 >> Caleb Wilson had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 14 North Carolina to a win against USC Upstate.

No. 15 Vanderbilt 83, Central Arkansas 72 >> Tyler Nickel scored a career-high 30 points and No. 15 Vanderbilt beat Central Arkansas.

No. 17 Arkansas 93, No. 16 Texas Tech 86 >> Trevon Brazile scored 18 of his 24 points after halftime and finished with 10 rebounds as No. 17 Arkansas overcame No. 16 Texas Tech in a rematch of a Sweet 16 game in last season’s NCAA Tournament.

Arkansas (8-2), which trailed by as many as 10 points before halftime, went ahead for good on Brazile’s driving layup that made it 78-77 with 5:20 left. A minute after that, coming out of a timeout, he made a move near the baseline that got JT Toppin in the air and drove by the preseason AP All-American for a one-handed slam dunk.

No. 18 Florida 80, George Washington 70 >> Xaivian Lee scored 24 points to lead No. 18 Florida to a victory over George Washington in the second game of the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic.

Lee scored a season high on 6-of-11 shooting, including making 4 of 8 from 3-point range.

No. 19 Kansas 77, N.C. State 76, OT >> Melvin Council Jr. had career highs of 36 points and nine made 3-pointers to help No. 19 Kansas edge N.C. State in overtime.

Council had made just 5 of 27 3s coming into the game, but took advantage of open looks early then largely carried the Jayhawks (8-3) down the stretch — including scoring Kansas’ last 13 points of regulation and feeding Flory Bidunga’s go-ahead dunk with 51.9 seconds left in the OT.

No. 21 Auburn 92, Chattanooga 78 >> Keyshawn Hall scored 22 points and No. 21 Auburn took advantage of a respite in its brutal schedule to beat Chattanooga.

No. 22 St. John’s 91, Iona 64 >> Oziyah Sellers scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half, Zuby Ejiofor tied a career-high by blocking eight shots for the second straight game and No. 22 St. John’s survived a difficult start and pulled away for a victory over Iona.

No. 1 UConn blows out No. 16 USC to snap the Trojans’ home win streak

Los Angeles >> Azzi Fudd scored 17 points and No. 1 UConn routed 16th-ranked Southern California 79-51, snapping the Trojans’ 20-game home winning streak with their best player on the bench watching.

JuJu Watkins also didn’t play when UConn beat USC 78-64 in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in March. She tore her ACL in the second round and is sitting out this season while rehabbing.

The Huskies (10-0) shut down USC star freshman Jazzy Davidson, who was held to 10 points on 3 of 13 shooting.

USC led 9-8 before UConn pulled away.

No. 5 LSU 87, Louisiana Tech 61 >> Mikaylah Williams led No. 5 LSU with 19 points as the Tigers struggled for almost three quarters before pulling away for a win against Louisiana Tech in the Compete 4 Cause Classic.

It was the second game and win for coach Kim Mulkey against her alma mater.

No. 6 Michigan 85, Akron 59 >> Syla Swords and Ashley Sofilkanich both had 17 points to lead five Michigan players in double-digit scoring, and the No. 6 Wolverines beat Akron.

Michigan (9-1) pulled away for good early in the second quarter, fueled by its defense. In the first half, the Wolverines forced 16 turnovers and generated 17 points off them. Michigan’s average of forcing 25.4 turnovers per game ranks eighth nationally and first in the Big Ten.

No. 9 Oklahoma 92, No. 23 Oklahoma State 70 >> Raegan Beers scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds, and No. 9 Oklahoma won its 10th straight by routing No. 23 Oklahoma State.

Sahara Williams scored 18 points and Aaliyah Chavez and Zya Vann added 15 each for the Sooners (11-1), who won their seventh straight in the series.

No. 11 Iowa 102, Lindenwood 68 >> Hannah Stuelke scored a season-high 29 points as No. 11 Iowa took down Lindenwood.

The Hawkeyes (10-1, 1-0 Big Ten) reached the century mark for the third time this season, and trailed for just over one minute of game time. They took the lead for good on Chazadi Wright’s 3-pointer 3:31 into regulation that started a 13-2 run.

No. 17 Ole miss 86, Wofford 52 >> Cotie McMahon racked up 24 points and Latasha Lattimore added 18 as No. 17 Ole Miss cruised past Wofford.

No. 20 Washington 79, Green Bay 74 >> Sayvia Sellers matched her career-high with 30 points and No. 20 Washington overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Green Bay.
