CHICO >> The Museum of Northern California Art is hoping for an upgrade in the next few years.
“Completion is entirely dependent on our fundraising success. We are hoping for within a few years,” project manager Kimberly Ranalla said. “We have a goal of $3 million plus for this project, which not only includes the restoration and design of the space but also operational components to manage the expansion including employment opportunities.”
Fundraising began Feb. 4. The expansion will be ideal for concerts, conferences, corporate events, weddings, parties, strategic planning meetings, educational events, performance art and art installations.
About 9,000 square feet will be added within the Veterans Memorial Hall building on the Esplanade in Chico. It will feature a stage and green room as well as increased gallery space, classrooms, a catering kitchen and restrooms. There will also be lifts compliant with the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) for access to the space and onto the stage for performers.
The space is projected to open between 2026 and 2028.
“All of us at monca are excited about this new space because it allows for more monca and more event space for the community,” Ranella said. “The renovation of the auditorium and stage as well as the creation of classrooms, a catering kitchen and added exhibition space will provide a much-needed venue for expanded exhibitions, art education programming, live performances, community and private events, and more.”
With the completion of the phase two renovation, the museum will house 17,000 square feet total with the new addition. Monca currently stands at 4,000 feet.
