Longmont’s Sunset Pool is on track to open on Memorial Day after contractors tackled a mechanical issue earlier this week.
On Sunday, contractors hired by the city began fixing a leak in one of the pool’s underground pipes. The leak was sealed by Wednesday.
Memorial Day is the typical opening date for Sunset Pool, which is operated by Longmont Recreation Services. The outdoor pool at 1900 Longs Peak Ave. has two water slides, six lap lanes, diving boards and a beach play area.
Sara Taylor, recreation area supervisor for the city, said the pool’s popularity during the holiday weekend motivated staff to work as quickly as possible to get the facility ready by Monday. The decision to open on Monday was based on the pool’s status Friday morning.
“It was so disheartening to think that we wouldn’t be able to offer the community this beautiful pool for Memorial Day, which kicks off summer,” Taylor said. “I think that’s why everybody worked so hard to push through so that we could be open for the holiday.”Taylor said the pipe had a crack containing a piece of pool goggles. Contractors removed the piece and lined the inside of the pipe, which is under roughly eight feet of concrete. The city paid contractors around $8,200 to repair the leak, which doesn’t include additional labor expenses.
“We were really excited that this company could just go in through the pipe and fix it,” Taylor said of the leak, “instead of tearing up our concrete, digging down eight feet and basically doing a massive excavation.”
The city has spent the past couple of days refilling the pool with over 500,000 gallons of water and heating it to the appropriate temperature.
While she said it was surprising to discover the leak, Taylor pointed out that the pipes have been around for more than two decades.
“Everything has a lifespan, especially when you’re dealing with water,” she said.
Sunset Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.
