


Tarik Skubal pitched one-run ball into the eighth inning, and the host Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Friday night in the opener of a weekend series between two of the majors’ best teams.
Skubal (6-2) the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, allowed eight hits, struck out six and walked none in 7 2/3 innings.
Skubal left with runners on the corners. Seiya Suzuki lifted a deep flyball to right off Will Vest, but Kerry Carpenter reached above the wall to keep Detroit in front.
Cubs starter Ben Brown (3-4) gave up two runs and seven hits in seven innings.
Spencer Torkelson and Jahmai Jones homered for the AL Central-leading Tigers.
Padres 2, Brewers 0: Manny Machado homered for a second straight game and five pitchers combined on a four-hitter as visiting San Diego beat Milwaukee.
Wandy Peralta (3-0) earned the win after replacing starter Randy Vásquez and striking out Christian Yelich to strand runners on second and third in the fifth. Robert Suarez retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his MLB-leading 20th save.
Yankees 9, Red Sox 6: Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a three-run homer and Anthony Volpe added a two-run shot in a five-run first inning against Walker Buehler as New York beat visiting Boston.
Aaron Judge went 3 for 5, raising his major league-leading average to .397. Chisholm Jr. had three hits, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Paul Goldschmidt also homered.
In his first time on the Yankee Stadium mound since the final out of the Dodgers’ World Series win last year, Buehler (4-4) gave up seven runs — five earned — and seven hits in two innings.
Mets 4, Rockies 2: Pinch-hitter Francisco Lindor, broken toe and all, hit a go-ahead two-run double in the ninth inning and New York beat Colorado at Coors Field.
Lindor lined a cutter from reliever Zach Agnos (0-2) into right field, scoring Juan Soto and Pete Alonso, who had a two-run double in the seventh..
Lindor was questionable to play at all this weekend after his right pinky toe was broken by a pitch in the first inning on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium.
Astros 4, Guardians 2: Colton Gordon got his first major league win and Houston won at Cleveland.
Christian Walker singled home two runs in the fifth inning for the Astros.
Gordon (1-1), making his fifth start, allowed one run on seven hits and struck out five.
Rays 4, Marlins 3: Jonathan Aranda drove in two runs to lead host Tampa Bay over Miami for its fourth straight win. The Marlins have lost five in a row.
Zack Littell (6-5) held the Marlins to one run on six hits over six innings.
Nationals 2, Rangers 0: Michael Soroka struck out seven in six innings, and Washington blanked visiting Texas, which lost its fourth in a row.
Soroka (3-3) allowed two hits and walked one.
Burnes to have surgery: All-Star right-hander Corbin Burnes of the Arizona Diamondbacks is set to undergo Tommy John elbow surgery, ending his season early in the first year of a $210 million, six-year contract.
Burnes left his most recent start with Arizona in the fifth inning Sunday.
He is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts this season.
Burnes signed with the Diamondbacks after earning his fourth consecutive All-Star nod in his only season with Baltimore in 2024. He spent his first six years with Milwaukee.
