A Hobart man who served six months in prison for storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 was fatally shot Sunday by a Jasper County Sheriff’s officer — less than a week after he was pardoned by President Donald Trump.

Matthew Huttle, 42, was identified Monday and an autopsy was performed, though not released to the public, according to an Indiana State Police press release.

A Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over a vehicle around 4:15 p.m. Sunday on Indiana 14 east of CR 475 East, which is near the Pulaski County line, according to the release.

When the officer attempted to arrest Huttle, he resisted and an altercation ensued. The officer fired his weapon, which fatally wounded Huttle, according to the release.

An initial investigation into the traffic stop found that Huttle “was in possession of a firearm” during the traffic stop, according to the release.

Officials did not provide a reason for the traffic stop in the release. Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield declined to comment further.

Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson said the officer was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol after an officer-involved shooting.

“Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Huttle,” Williamson said.

Once the Indiana State Police complete their investigation of the incident, the findings will be submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for a formal review.

Four men, including Huttle, with Northwest Indiana ties were among the more than 1,500 people pardoned by Trump last week for storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Huttle was there and served six months in prison for trespassing. Huttle went to Washington D.C. with his uncle Dale Huttle, 73, of Crown Point.Dale Huttle served about six months of a 2 1/2-year sentence at FCI Thomson, a federal prison near the Illinois-Iowa border, before he was released on Jan. 20, according to a federal inmate search. His original release date was in December 2026.

Dale Huttle did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
