The Merseyside club’s record-equaling 20th English league title matched the achievement of its great rival Manchester United.

Liverpool fans partied inside and outside its famous Anfield Stadium as coach Arne Slot sealed a remarkable first year in charge of the club.

After going behind to an early goal from Dominic Solanke, Liverpool powered back with strikes from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gapko before halftime to ensure the celebrations wouldn’t be delayed any more. The title was sealed in style after the break as Mohamed Salah added another and Destiny Udogie’s own-goal rounded off the rout.

Duke’s Maluach declares for NBA Draft >> Duke freshman big man Khaman Maluach is jumping to the NBA.

The program announced in a social media post that the 7-foot-2, 250-pound Maluach would go the one-and-done route after helping the Blue Devils reach the Final Four.

Notably, Maluach is an elite rim-runner who used his length to finish off lobs for easy scores or to block shots at the center of a defense that ranked among the nation’s best in KenPom’s efficiency metrics, including with his ability to defend on the perimeter with Duke’s switching defense.

Maluach averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 71.2% from the field, though he also was reliable at the line (76.6%) and made four 3-pointers to show the potential for expanded range.

NBA hall of famer Barnett dies >> Dick Barnett, a basketball Hall of Famer who played on both New York Knicks NBA championship teams after being part of a historic college powerhouse at Tennessee A&I, has died. He was 88.

The Knicks announced the death of the former guard. There were no details provided about his death.

Barnett played on the Knicks’ title teams in 1970 and 1973 and reached the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and as a member of his college teams at Tennessee A&I (later Tennessee State), the first HBCU to win a national championship in basketball.

Falcons’ DC’s son behind Sanders prank call >> The Atlanta Falcons said that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s son was responsible for a prank call made to Cleveland Browns draft pick Shedeur Sanders.

The Falcons released a statement saying 21-year-old Jax Ulbrich “unintentionally came across the draft contact phone number for Shedeur Sanders off an open iPad while visiting his parent’s home and wrote the number down to later conduct a prank call.”

The Falcons said Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of the data exposure or the prank until after the fact.

Baseball

Chisholm’s suspension dropped >> Major League Baseball dropped a one-game suspension against New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Chisholm was suspended on April 18, a day after his ejection at the Tampa Bay Rays. MLB penalized him for his ejection and violation of its social media policy. Chisholm appealed, delaying any penalties.

MLB announced that was the suspension was dropped. Under the settlement, first reported by the New York Daily News, the fine was maintained, a person familiar with the agreement told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the detail of the fine was not announced.

Mets’ Minter placed on IL >> New York Mets reliever A.J. Minter was put on the 15-day injured list, a day after straining his left triceps during a 2-0 win against the Washington Nationals.

The 31-year-old left-hander was facing James Wood with one out in the eighth inning when he appeared to wince after a 3-1 pitch and walked to the back of the mound. Manager Carlos Mendoza and the team trainer came out and, after a short conversation, Minter left with an athletic trainer.

Yankees’ Williams loses closer job >> Devin Williams lost his job as Yankees closer after stumbling repeatedly during his first 10 games with New York.

Manager Aaron Boone made the announcement before Sunday’s doubleheader against Toronto, two days after the two-time All-Star wasted a ninth-inning lead in a 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays.

Acquired from Milwaukee in December, Williams has an 11.25 ERA.

Tennis

Sabalenka, Zverev advance in Madrid Open >> Top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka rallied to defeat former doubles partner Elise Mertens in three sets and advance to the last 16 of the Madrid Open.

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev scraped past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after requiring tiebreakers in the final two sets of their match, while defending men’s champion Andrey Rublev lost in three sets to Alexander Bublik.

Sabalenka got off to a poor start against the 26th-ranked Mertens, but picked up the pace to comfortably close out the match at the Caja Magica center court.

The two-time champion in Madrid won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to keep alive her hopes of reaching the final for the third straight time. Sabalenka won the title in the Spanish capital in 2021 and 2023, and finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek last year.
