Davis Musical Theatre Company’s production of “The Pirates of Penzance” is set to open March 3.
In this swashbuckling musical journey, Frederic is mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate instead of a pilot. Now 21, Frederic decides to dedicate himself to the eradication of pirates.
“Then Mabel enters his life, a daughter of the Major-General and with soft-tempered pirates, lily-livered police and fair maidens, this 1879 Gilbert and Sullivan comic light opera bears up well for 2023,” a press release from the DMTC read.
“Pirates of Penzance” is set to run through March 26 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. All performances will be at the Jean Henderson Performing Arts Center, located at 607 Pena Dr. in Davis.
Tickets are $18 general, $16 students and seniors (55 and over) and $14 each for groups of 10 or more.

The Davis Musical Theatre Company will be holding auditions for their production of “Disney’s Newsies” next month.
Based on the 1992 Disney film musical of the same name, which was inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City, “Newsies” follows charismatic and rebellious newsboy Jack Kelly and his fellow newsies. When publisher Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices making it harder for the young newspaper salesmen to make a buck, the boys go on strike.
Auditions will be held on Sunday, March 5 or Monday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jean Henderson Performing Arts Center, located at 607 Pena Dr. in Davis. Call backs will be the next day on Tuesday, March 7 at 7:30 at the same location.
Those interested in auditioning should bring a prepared song that is not from “Newsies,” sheet music with piano accompaniment and should be prepared for cold readings.
All roles are open including Jack Kelly, Joseph Pulitzer, Katherine Plumber, who is an ambitious young reporter fighting against the sexism of the journalism industry and the rest of the newsies.
The show opens on Friday, April 28. For more information, visit https://dmtc.org/.
