Rio to host ski and snowboard film showing

The Rio Theatre at 1205 Soquel Ave. will be hosting the 29th annual ski and snowboard film “Beyond the Fantasy,” on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m. Presented by Teton Gravity Research, this year’s film immerses itself in the whimsical creativity of the snow athletes to transform unlikely visions into reality. Packed with adrenaline-fueled action, “Beyond the Fantasy” also celebrates the unbreakable camaraderie that makes snow riding a way of life.

Attendees are urged to arrive early to participate in a prize giveaway, a chance to win a trip to Grand Targhee, Wyoming, to film with TGR, a trip to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming and other exciting prize packs. Demo Day at Back Nine Grill & Bar

Join Santa Cruz Accelerates for the 6th annual Demo Day on Nov. 6, 6-8 p.m., at Back Nine Grill & Bar, 555 Hwy 17 at Pasatiempo exit. A program for startups on the Central California Coast, five new startups will deliver 5-minute presentations to a panel of judges and venture capitalists on tech, sustainability and more. Master gardeners to hold Earth friendly workshops

Don’t miss the UC Master Gardeners of Monterey, Santa Cruz & San Benito Counties’ new workshop Designing your Garden on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Monterey Public Library, 625 Pacific St., from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The workshop will focus on helping attendees understand garden space and year-round building techniques. It will offer tips for creating sustainable landscapes that benefit the environment and simplify gardening. Participants are asked to bring a device with internet access, such as a phone, tablet or laptop. Admission is free though donations are accepted. Enrollment is limited. New Big Basin trail guide available

A new guide for the Redwood Loop Trail at Big Basin State Park has just been published. Authored by a team of biologists and environmental scientists, the guide examines the impact of the devastating 2020 fire on the park and the long-term changes it brought to the landscape. It also explores the status of the plants and animals living alongside the redwoods.

Copies of the free trail guide can be downloaded at the Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregional Council’s website, scmbc.org. Hikers are advised to download and/or print out the guide prior to traveling to the park as there is no Wi-Fi available.

Understanding Gaza film series to be held

Join the Reel Work Labor Film Festival for two screenings of three short films about life in Palestine on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 7 p.m. at Somos Café and community center, 112 E. Beach St. in Watsonville, and on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m. at SEIU Union Hall, 517 Mission St. in Santa Cruz.

This month’s program will be featuring “Resistance Climbing,” about a group of Bedouins, activists and urban professionals who turn to climbing for relief from the Israeli occupation. “Returning to Zarnouqa” follows Haidar Eid, who grew up in Gaza City and wishes to visit his parents’ village of Zarnouqa, where they were forcibly removed in 1948. By 2023, he faces expulsion again, emphasizing the urgent call for Return. In “From Gaza to Cuba,” Murid Abukhater works to stay focused on his goal at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana to become a doctor and help his community while his home in Gaza is under siege.

Annual crab and shrimp feed to be held

The Santa Cruz Portuguese Hall has announced tickets are now on sale for their annual “Famous” Crab & Shrimp Feed Nov. 9 at 216 Evergreen St. from 3-10 p.m.

Admission is $75 per person and children 12 and under are $35. The price includes crab, shrimp, garlic bread, green salad and wine. Enjoy live music by the local Digbeats and dancing.
