



The La Mirada baseball team jumped on Birmingham early and never looked back in a 7-0 victory in the first round of the Boras Classic at Mater Dei High School on Tuesday.
The Matadores scored six runs in the first inning on two home runs.
Senior Travis Friend got them going with a grand slam and sophomore Bear Calvo followed later in the inning with a two-run home run. Friend was 2-for-4 and also scored twice.
That was more than enough for starting pitcher Jacob Oropeza, who allowed just two hits with four strikeouts over five innings. Nathaniel Maldonado pick up the save with two no-hit innings to close out.
La Mirada (8-1) advances to take on undefeated Huntington Beach (7-0), a 4-1 winner over Aquinas, in today’s quarterfinals at Mater Dei at 3 p.m.
Vista Murrieta 2, Maranatha 1: Minutemen pitcher Zack Strickland struck out nine in five innings, allowing three hits and one run in their first-round loss at the Boras Classic, which was played at JSerra.
Despite Strickland’s strong effort, Vista Murrieta scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on an sacrafice fly that brought home the go-ahead run to take a 2-1 lead, and that was enough.
Maranatha’s Trevor Rivas provided the Minutemen’s only run, homering to left field in the fifth inning to to tie the score, 1-1. Strickland had two of the Minutemen’s five hits.
California 2, Kennedy 1: The Condors (9-3) rallied with a run in the sixth and seventh inning to pull out a victory in a consolation game at the Anaheim Lions tournament.
Ricky Gonzales broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning by doubling home Adam Vitela for the eventual game-winning run. Ethan Martinez started for the Condors and pitched three shutout innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.
The Condors next play against Segerstrom on Friday at Anaheim Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
Thompson (Alabama) 7, South Hills 2: The Huskies have had a rough start to their road trip in Tennessee for a spring tournament.
After losing to Tennessee’s Siegel, 5-2, on Monday, the Huskies followed with a loss to Thompson, a team from Alabama, on Tuesday.
Thompson jumped on South Hills by scoring four runs in the first inning.
South Hills’ Diego Villarreal tripled home two runs in the third inning to cut the Warriors’ lead in half, but the Warriors added three runs in the fifth inning to pull away.
Warriors pitcher Ma’Kale Holden pitched a complete game and allowed just two Huskies hits to pick up the victory.
Bishop Amat 4, St. Paul 1: The Lancers got a great pitching effort from Izaac Muniz, who had 11 strikeouts and flirted with a no-hitter and allowed just one hit in 5 2/3 innings.
Still, the Lancers needed extra innnings to beat the Swordsmen, scoring three runs in the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
The Lancers improved to 11-3 and remained undefeated in the Del Rey League at 5-0. St. Paul, who swept La Salle last week, dropped to 10-3 and 4-3. The two teams will meet again on Friday at Bishop Amat.
Bishop Amat’s Roman Spencer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to bring in the go-ahead run for a 2-1 lead. Justin Peinado followed with an RBI single and Jacob Campos’ ground out scored another run to break it open.
The game was scoreless until Bishop Amat’s Santiago Ramirez drew a one-out walk with the bases loaded to score Justin Peinado for a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning.
Muniz was sailing along with a no-hitter when he gave up back-to-back walks with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Elias Mota made him pay, breaking up Muniz’s no-hitter with a double that scored Robert Encinas Jr., to tie the score, 1-1.
La Salle 6, Paraclete 3: The Lancers’ Aidan Gray broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning with a bases-loaded triple that brought in all three runs, and they held on to improve to 8-4 and 4-2 in the Del Rey League.
Andrew Luna had a double, two hits and two RBIs and Frane Flores had two hits and an RBI.
SOFTBALL
Bonita 11, Claremont 4: Skyy Hicks went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Bearcats to victory.
Camryn Van Valkenburgh had three hits, an RBI and Madi Arzate tripled in two runs.
Bishop Amat 6, St. Paul 5: The Lancers scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead, and held on after the Swordsmen scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to inch closer.
Avery Hipolito had two hits, a double and two RBIs for the Lancers.
