Lake Michigan is near its all-time high-level mark, which means the beach at Portage Lakefront is narrower than normal. Portage Lakefront is operated by the city of Portage in partnership with the National Park Service, and is one of the most popular sites in the Indiana Dunes National Park, according to a release.
The beach at Portage Lakefront and the surrounding area contain driftwood and other storm debris, deposited during winter and spring storms. Additionally, the beach has no lifeguards, and swimming is strongly discouraged when the water is rough and there are large waves, due the danger of rip currents. Rip currents are likely at beaches like Portage Lakefront due to breakwater and other structures on the lake, according to the release.
The Indiana Dunes National Park recommends watching children closely even when the water appears to be calm.
