CAPITOLA >> Local residents with an eye for transportation issues will have an opportunity to take a deep dive into a highly scrutinized section of the Coastal Rail Trail project in Capitola at a special meeting this week.

The Capitola City Council, in collaboration with the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission, will host a town hall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the New Brighton Middle School Performing Arts Center.

The informational event is an opportunity for the public to hear more about segments 10 and 11 of the project that stretch from 17th Avenue in Live Oak to State Park Drive near the Seacliff neighborhood.

In addition to a detailed summary of the two rail trail segments, city, county and commission experts will also cover use of the Capitola Trestle, the Park Avenue trail realignment effort, funding availability, future maintenance and the timeline for upcoming project milestones. A joint presentation will be shared by staff from the city of Capitola, the transportation commission and Santa Cruz County.

This latest meeting is an encore to a similar one hosted nearly a month ago by the transportation commission that covered much of the same subject matter and made staff available to engage directly with the public.

The meetings were planned at the request of the Capitola City Council, which reviewed plans for the segment at a meeting in February, but asked for more community engagement after a public outcry.

The Wednesday meeting will have a structured agenda, but no official action will be taken by city officials. The City Council plans to convene for a special session April 17 to make a final decision about its preferences for the Park Avenue alignment of the rail trail, according to a release from the city.

Community members can attend in person at 250 Washburn Ave., Capitola, but an online viewing option is also available and can be accessed by visiting the city’s website at cityofcapitola.org.
