Prosecutors dropped rioting charges this week against five people accused in a confrontation with police at a Schererville bowling alley in February.
Shakaylah Anderson, 24, of Chicago; Diamonte Grandberry Payton, 23, of Riverdale, Illinois; Myeisha Cobbins, 29, of Chicago; Trevon Grandberry, 29, of Chicago; and Mariyah Green, 22, of Chicago are charged with battery on a public safety official, a level 6 felony; and various misdemeanors.
Deputy Prosecutor Jovanni Miramontes filed to drop their original cases Monday, writing in Anderson’s case he needed to “correct an issue with the (case) number.”
However, when the cases were refiled Wednesday, they no longer included the rioting charges. Green’s charge for essentially impersonating a police officer also appears to have been dropped.
Schererville police Detective Scott Savich wrote he and another officer were working off-duty security at the bowling alley around 9:30 p.m. Feb. 8, when the manager kicked the party out after they were yelling and allegedly threatening staff.
Payton and Grandberry told the cops they wanted a refund. Payton went to the front counter, where he continued to yell at staff. The officers told them they had to leave, or they would be taken to jail.
“I don’t (care), I have bail money,” Payton said.
The officers called for on-duty cops for backup as the group refused to leave.
Payton slammed his fist on a table. Grandberry tried to intervene as Payton fought cops trying to arrest him, the affidavit states.
An officer pushed Grandberry back twice after he ignored his orders. Grandberry shoved the cop back. The officer grabbed them as they landed on an $800 sofa, breaking it. While officers struggled on the ground to arrest Grandberry, another officer used a stun gun on him.
A couple of women surrounded them, screaming at the cops.
Officers arrested Green, who was “flailing,” for hitting the officer. She threatened the cop’s job and claimed she was a Chicago Police officer. He asked for her badge number. She declined. She wasn’t listed in a police employment database.
Anderson was arrested when she refused to leave and tried to “push through” an officer.
Cops alleged Cobbins “purposely” elbowed another police officer. She fought with officers, then screamed she was pregnant as they arrested her.
Illinois man gets probation for body slamming motorist in Target parking lot
An Illinois man got one year on probation earlier this month for following a motorist off the highway, then body slamming him in the Munster Target parking lot.
Shakeim A. McMillian, 39, of Park Forest, pleaded guilty and was sentenced March 7 for battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, court records show.
The motorist, 63, said he was exiting off Interstate 80/94 south on Calumet Avenue Sept. 9, 2023, to go to his granddaughter’s soccer game when he pulled into the store parking lot to get away from a car that was following him.
The other man parked near him. Both men got out.
When the victim asked McMillian what his problem was, he wrapped his arms around the older man, slammed him to the ground, then left, the affidavit states. The motorist had multiple fractured ribs and bruises.
Deputy Prosecutor Chris Bruno was assigned. Defense lawyer Michael Campbell represented McMillian. The case was before Judge Samuel Cappas.
