A man was found dead near his home in Allenspark Thursday two days after his family reported him missing.
According to a release, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a call Tuesday from a family member requesting a welfare check for a 78-year-old man who lived near Allenspark.
The family member told deputies they “had not heard from him since Jan. 16, which was unusual.”
Deputies went to his home on Big Owl Road Tuesday for a welfare check and determined he was not home. However, it appeared that he had left the house on foot, according to the release.
Investigators began an initial search of the surrounding property Tuesday but were unable to locate him.
According to the release, on Wednesday, 15 search-and-rescue personnel and volunteers widened the search area. An Everbridge notification was also sent to the surrounding area asking if anyone had seen the missing man.
Despite personnel, search dogs and drones being use in the search, emergency personnel were unable to locate him, according to the release.
When 35 search-and-rescue personnel and volunteers continued the search Thursday morning, a man matching his description was found deceased at 11:40 a.m., around half a mile from the missing man’s home.
The deceased man was found by members of the Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, a volunteer organization composed of high school students.
The identification of the decedent as well as the cause and manner of death will be determined by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.
Assisting agencies include the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Allenspark Fire Protection District, Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, Boulder Emergency Squad, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Larimer County Search and Rescue and Rocky Mountain Rescue Group.
