St. Francis High sophomore Maya Calfee made the game-winning jump shot as time expired, and the Sharks girls basketball team stunned Monterey 42-41 for the consolation championship at the Lady Sharks Shootout in Watsonville on Monday.

Calfee took an inbounds pass from Liliana Whitmeyer on the baseline with 2.2 second left, dribbled once to gain some separation from the two Monterey defending her, and buried her turnaround, fadeaway jumper with a hand in her face near the 3-point arc.

“A last-minute, game-winning shot is amazing! I jumped up and down, just like the team did,” Sharks coach Jesse Yniguez said. “It was an exciting way to end a game in our favor. I know Maya will have many opportunities like that in her career.”

Whitmeyer made seven 3s and finished with 21 points for the Sharks (6-2). Calfee made four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points.

“Liliana’s shooting tonight was clutch,” Yniguez said. “Liliana hit shots when we needed them the most. This game went back and forth and we needed every basket we could get.”

Sophomore Jeanine Williams scored a team-high 27 points for the Toreadores (3-4). Teammate Aundrea Boykin scored 10 points.

The Sharks play at King City (1-9) on Monday at 7 p.m.

At Dublin 55, Watsonville 51, OT >> Freshman Isabella Alvarez had 23 points and seven steals, but the Wildcatz came up short in the 24th West Coast Jamboree’s Pearl Division championship at Dublin High on Monday.

The teams were tied at 45-all at the end of regulation.

Junior Leilani Yasin had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcatz. Junior Stephanie Martinez, honored with the Sportsmanship Award, had nine points, 13 rebounds, and four steals.

Junior Addison Leomiti scored 15 points to lead the Gaels (7-0). Sophomore Gaia Lembo scored 14 points.

Alvarez and senior Hailey Brooks were named to the all-tournament team.

Watsonville (10-2) hosts Hollister (6-5) on Monday at 7 p.m.

Monte Vista Christian 49, Pajaro Valley 22 >> Senior guard/forward Sophia Cortes made four 3-pointers and scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to help the Mustangs earn seventh place in Lady Shark Shootout at St. Francis High on Monday.

MVC made nine 3-pointers. Freshman guard Mia Malaspina made three 3s and scored 13 points for the Mustangs (4-8), and Senior forward/center Amya Tellez made two 3s and scored eight points. Sophomore forward Emily Madison made five free throws and finished with seven points.

MVC led 23-13 at the break, and blew the game open when it outscored the Grizzlies 16-0 in the third quarter.

Junior Olivia Contreras scored nine of her team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter for the Grizzlies (1-7).

Pajaro Valley plays at Oakwood (2-1) in Morgan Hill on Friday at 4 p.m.

MVC plays at Rancho San Juan (4-4) in Salinas on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.

At Aptos 43, Summit Shasta 41, OT >> Senior Berkeley Ashby made three 3-pointers and produced team highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds in the Mariners’ nonleague, overtime win Monday. She scored all six of Aptos’ points in the extra stanza.

Aptos led 23-14 at the half, but found itself tied at 37-all by the end of regulation.

Sophomore Eliya Chavez had nine points, three rebounds, and three steals for the Mariners, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

“It was a great bounce-back win after a difficult NorCal Invitational,” Mariners coach Bruce Funk said. “The team showed a lot of perseverance in the win.”

Mariners junior Abby Sherwood had eight points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore guard Emi Gansaver-Piltcher has seven points, six assists, four steals, and three rebounds.

Aptos hosts defending CCS Division II finalist Christopher (8-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

Santa Cruz 79, AIMS College Prep (Oakland) 71 >> Junior forward DeMarco Hunter had 40 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks to help the Cardinals win their finale at the Damian Lillard Classic on Monday.

The Cardinals (5-7) went 2-2 in the tournament at Oakland High. During that stretch, Hunter scored 142 points, pulled down 64 rebounds, and made 11 blocks.

“DeMarco has been consistent all season,” Cardinals coach Lawan Milhouse said.

Mosiah Cumberbatch and Keyondre Randolph each had 10 points and three rebounds for the Santa Cruz. Randolph also made three steals. Guard LJ Legan added nine points.

“Other guys are starting to contribute here and there,” Milhouse said.

Senior wing Nathan Ykeallo helped the Golden Eagles (5-9) trim their 19-point deficit to two in the fourth quarter, after Milhouse received a technical, but Santa Cruz earned some breathing room down the stretch.

The Cardinals, the defending CIF Division III state finalist, host defending CIF D-II NorCal Regional finalist Oakland (8-4) on Jan. 11 at 2 p.m.

Junior point guard Guerande Houssin, a transfer from Harbor, becomes eligible on Saturday and will see his first action of the season.

“He can handle the ball, distribute, and get to the rim,” Milhouse said. “He can play.”

Houssin arrival will shift Cumberbatch from point guard to the shooting guard, and have Legan, a transfer from Manteca, coming off the bench.

Boys soccer

Bishop Mora Salesian 2, Aptos 0 >> The Mustangs (6-6-1) of Los Angeles scored early in the first half and tacked on an insurance goal in the 60th minute to sink the Mariners in the Elite Division’s third-place match at the 29th annual SoCal Classic at Oceanside High on Monday.

Goalie Noah Curran made seven saves for the Mariners (5-3-1), who went 1-2-0 at the tournament.

Mariners coach Roberto Zuniga praised his players for representing the school well.

“It was a great experience, a great team bonding event for our players, and an opportunity to play against tough opponents in the SoCal area,” Zuniga said.

Aptos plays at San Lorenzo Valley (2-2-1) in Felton to open Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play on Jan. 15 at 3:30 p.m.
