Santa Barbara

Mark Egan, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, left us peacefully in his sleep on the evening of April 4, 2025, in Santa Barbara. He was universally loved and admired.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 46 years, Kay Egan; his daughter, Christina Egan; and his sons, Richard Egan, Jim Benzian, and Mike Benzian. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Max, Emma, Anavieve, Kate, and William. Mark grew up on the East Coast attending Canterbury School and University of Virginia. He was a member of St Elmo Fraternity and remained active with the Alumni Association throughout his life. Mark’s career in container leasing took him to New York, Peru, Venezuela, and many other places around the globe. After relocating to Marin County, he founded Nautilus Leasing in 1976—an endeavor that would become a cornerstone of his professional legacy.

In 1979, Mark married his life partner, Kay Benzian. Life in Kentfield was highlighted with parties, games, travel, and sailing adventures. He especially loved racing on the Bay and once competed in the prestigious Transpac. Mark was a valued member of the Sausalito Yacht Club, the St. Francis Yacht Club, and the Bohemian Club.

Mark was a light in the world—known for his kindness and warmth. He rarely spoke an unkind word and, to our knowledge, had no enemies. His spirit lives on in all of us.
